Down on power. Bad mpg.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Ever since is discovered the previous owner had plugged the DRL lights into the MAF the car hasnt felt right. Once we cut the DRL wires going into the maf and cleared the faults I gave it a drive and it felt like a new car. Full of turbo boost and power.

The next day it suddenly seemed down on power again, and since then there's no significant turbo boost it pulls but almost as half arsed as it did with the fault.

The engine seems to run quite rough now, it certainly doesn't have the pull it did when we cleared the fault. Also mpg is shocking around town and on the motorway.

dont know why the drl`s have been wired into the maf sensor. but sounds like this may have caused your maf sensor to be faulty. usually with a poor maf sensor u can expect poor mpg because it does not know how much air is been taken in the air intake so will probably give u no power and overcompensate with loads of fuel so may get a little black smoke.

hope this helps

Cheers! Yeh I thought it might still be the MAF but I'm stumped as it's not showing a fault on it.

Urrghh..

is there an engine warning light on the dash. if you know anyone with vcds they could plug in and have a look and see if any fault codes will have been stored in the ecu. whilst they have vcds plugged in unplug the maf sensor plug and it should put a fault up and be opencircuit. so then it is pointing to a faulty maf sensor. have you tried unplugging it and refitting the plug after about 5 mins see if this changes anything, or disconnect the plug and take it for a short drive and see if u notice a difference in performance

I'll disconnect for a bit and see if that helps! The engine warning light came on, and that's when I discovered the DRL was plugged into the MAF. Cleared the warning light and fault, cut the drl wire and it fixed it temporarily. The MAF was never disconnected so i'll give it a go at disconnecting and reconnecting!

Hope it does trick.

if u unplug it, it will probably reset itself. if not then you need a new maf sensor

Ok dude, i'll give it a whirl tomorrow. Hope it doesn't need a new one....

Just a quick question, when I disconnect and reconnect the maf plug to reset it does the engine or ignition have to be on?

Disconnect the plug with the ignition off. Leave a few mins and then plug back in and go for a short drive see if u notice a difference.

if you run the engine with the maf sensor unplugged it register a fault code and brings up the eml

So it will be an open circuit so therefore putting eml light on so its pointing to a faulty maf
