V5 logbook question?

Featured Replies

The yeti is getting part x'd hopefully at the end of the week (if Grimsby ever let it go) for the new yeti.

And I can't find the logbook anywhere.

I've just spoke to the dealer about this, they didn't seem too worried.

I'm going to call the DVLA first thing tomorrow to get a replacement logbook, my question is does anyone know how long (realistically) it will take to arrive?

And will the dealer let me have the new car if the logbook does not arrive in time?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Without a logbook you cannot notify the DVLA that you have sold the car to a trader by sending back the appropriate part of the document which must be signed by both you and the dealer, and the dealer should also write their VAT number on the part you send back.

This is your responsibility, and the car will remain in your name until the DVLA receive this part of the V5. Until that happens you will still be responsible for the vehicle, its road tax and any fines etc. incurred.

New V5 should take a couple of weeks or so, since no checks will be carried out as you are the current keeper.

Thanks, just spoke to them again they said they will still do the part exchange and when the v5 arrives I can just take it into them.

I've only just seen your post or I would have reassured you earlier. Exactly the same thing happened to me. I think paper documentation is seen as less important in these computerised days. When you buy a new car nowadays, DVLA are supposed to send you a V5 within a couple of weeks. It's not unknown for them to fail, and then to charge for a replacement later on!

The dealer will not be worried.

Until it comes through and the yellow bit is sent off the car is your responsibility.

A replacement usually arrives in 8 to 10 working days, in my experience.

In the meantime they can still get the car prepared and start to advertise it.

My new Yeti was registered with my private plate on the 5th march (over a month ago) by the garage ,but I'm still waiting for the logbook .

Called DVLA yesterday and was informed due to staff shortages things are taking longer than usual .

Also waiting for a road tax refund off my old car which has not arrived, again told staff shortages causing problems.

There was no checking to see if they had received my old tax disc or how far my V5 had progressed .

Appears they are well behind with most things.

Relative works at DVLA and they are massively understaffed at present as most of the Agency workers have been "laid off".

End of the financial year??

Didn't the DVLA in Swansea have a lottery win with a syndicate, but those that were not paid up were being ignored, causing massive unrest in the workplace and altercations resulting in security having to escort people out the building? I read something recently about such a thing. Those that gamble in a public work place will go to HELL, or maybe just mess up your car registration....

We bought the Yeti on a Friday just over a fortnight ago. I was gobsmacked when the new V5 arrived on the following Monday. I guess the garage must have begun registration earlier that week.

My thanks to everyone for the info. Still waiting for the car to arrive, 7days in Grimsby so far.

No, that's how long it takes sometimes.

The last four cars I've bought have all been followed with a new V5c within four working days.

Like many standard processes these days no human intervention is required and the automatic operates very quickly. In a new car registration the dealer completes a screen in a few minutes and everything forward happens quickly .

Anything non standard requires a real person and therefore needs to wait until the right person is free.
