Modifications..........why?

Featured Replies

For real modifications there are several real reasons.

1. To build the car you want when it's not available (4wd VRS would be a relevant example).

2. Because you've always wanted to (4wd VRS comes to mind again).

But most of the young guys doing the same thing to every car just seem to be trying to fit in. They claim to be expressing their individuality, but they're all doing the same thing.

Buy a car.

Join the forum.

Lower it.

Bigger wheels.

Body kit.

Air filter that doesn't actually filter.

Noisey exhaust.

Intercooler if it's a turbo.

When they are done, they've produced just another abomination just like their mates.

You'll find in pretty much any car modification game you've got a few unique leaders and a whole herd of sheep following badly.

That's a pretty huge brush you've found to tar everyone with, but hey, one person agrees with you, so you must be right :-)

  • Einstein labia? Isn't that another way of saying clever cu.........?

  • Don't you just love predictive text? . Those two words should be 'Fabia' and 'Bilstein'

  • Yup - Personally would rather 'waste' money on cleaning/modding my car than spending it all down the pub

I thought you'd fit quite squarely into #2: Because you've always wanted to.

Isn't that the truth! :D

Tis true. But you also help my sales figures :p

Personalising your car! And if you fit the bits yourself you learn so it becomes quite a hobby. Plus, if you modify it right . You can surprise a lot of cars a few classes higher up ;)

The operative word here is "do it right" ;)

The thing is, who is to say what is the right and wrong thing to do to a car. If people want to spend £X for no performance gain, doesn't mean that the person spending that money is wrong in what they've spent because they clearly wanted to spend that money for something they wanted. It's a bit like bonnet bras, they aren't my cup of tea but that's my personal opinion and i won't go around mocking everyone that has one if that's what they want on their car. If someone asks for an opinion on something, then they open themselves up to both positive and negative comments.

If you were to buy someone a car and they wanted to add non-performance parts to it, then you might be able to have a say but until that point, then let the owner of the car decide what they would rather have on it, be it for performance or looks.

I have stickers on my car, they're not to everyones liking, but who gives a **** when it's my car and i will decide what i want to do with it. If someone starts spiving off at me saying it looks horrible and i never asked for their opinion, then i have the right to ignore their comments or tell them to stick their comments where the sun doesn't shine.

If you like it, that's all that matters, in my opinion anyway. :)

Agreed, that comes under Point 5 I suppose. It is more about people who are convinced that the "performance" mods they do are increasing performance in some way when they actually can have the opposite effect. I'd never comment i any other way than politely positive if somebody showed me their car with a massive rear spoiler or something and clearly being very proud of it. I was taught one thing as a child, If you cannot say something positive keep your mouth shut! Enven here on Briskie there is a red Fabia with an aftrmarket spoiler people felt at liberty to ridicule, which I found disgusting really (the open ridicule, not the spoiler!). You can do thread search yourself :)

This, this, this and this.

I told SWMBO that I wanted to map the Superb.

She said one word that killed it straight away....

"Why?"

My one had a different question " How much and what about the insurance" LOL - that really killed it!

Just say better fuel economy, it always works ;-)

I find honesty the best policy. :D

Because no-one has ever made the "perfect mass market car"?

I was dead lucky when I bought my Octy, because nearly everything was the way I wanted it or very close to it. The only mod I actually wanted was to add a leather steering wheel glove. Occasionally I'd like more power, but even that's a rare event.

If I told my missus I wanted to map a car, she'd ask "why? You've got a Sat Nav"!

Daft cow

Each to their own on ANY mod. I listed a couple of the bigger projects I'd undertaken, and no not to everyones taste but at the time I liked each one in their own way.

I have tears in my eyes from restrianed laughter!

I told mine after i'd had it remapped. ;)

I wouldn't have said a word and just done it.

Just map it, you wear the trousers. If she don't like it divorce/dump the bint*

Maybe the above is the reason I'm single :giggle:

I'm sure there'll be one along shortly

I would have never dreamed about modifying a car, or even learning about them, until I bought my first 'nice' one and joined the owners club.

I wanted to learn how to look after it at first, after all I'd spent roughly £10k plus traded in a Corsa for £2k. I wanted to learn how to do DIY jobs myself because the plan is to keep this car a long time, to use for work and put intergallactic mileage on it. Bearing that in mind, I wanted to know how to maintain it properly to prevent big bills.

Then I saw what other people to do their cars. For me, on a 1.6TDI, it's not about performance, but about looks. I saw things on people's cars that I really liked the look of, and started to want to do myself. All I've done so far is get hold of some pretty rare official SEAT LED rear lights, but people want them so bad and everyone, including myself think they look better. Then it's little things like the GTI pedals, just stuff that makes the car look, and feel better for me (not anybody else, although it's a bonus if other people like it).

I've only done two mods, and had I bought all the parts brand new the bill would have been £550. The rear LED lights from SEAT cost £500, and the pedals £50. I only bought the pedals new and got a really nice set of LED rear lights second hand, which I will easily get the money back for should I want to sell them.

There are more physical mods I would like to do when I get more cash, but they're only so I like the way my car looks. If I had a better engine, I may go for a remap etc, the only time I'd go for a remap on my TDI is to improve mpg.

Good question.

From my point of veiw it's because I enjoy modifying. It gives me something to look forward to (rolling road days, meets etc). Whilst my life does not solely revolve around cars, it is certainly a big part of who I am - it's also my only real hobby; as it is my friends.

Plus there is nothing more fun than driving a Skoda capable of suprising more expensive performance cars.

And partly from sitting behind a modded Furby a little while ago (complete with silly-noisey exhaust, lowered etc) waiting for it to get out of the way of my boggo Focus 1.9 TDCi.

A twist to this - Annoying as a loud exhaust maybe to live with, it actually gets people noticed on the roads (good or bad). So they'll react to your presence, by slowing down or speeding up or get out the way, either way they know that your there, which is a good thing for safety.... :giggle:

I've only ever had a remap, which is bordering on std practice anyway. I'd consider uprating the suspension ie only the vehicle dynamics and performance. I'm not arsed about the looks otherwise I would not have bought an fl Octavia for sure; a thing of beauty it ain't, but as an anonymous Q car it's almost perfect.

On the concept of loud exhausts, last night was a classic.

Crossing the road over to the yard and heard an almighty roar just as I was about to cross, so I stepped back had a look and saw a yellow Civic a few hundred yards away. By the note the exhaust was making, I thought, better not risk it and wait....... and wait I did. To say this thing sounded like a 747 taking off would be an understatement, but be jesus, I could've crossed the road at least twice before this 'thing' was close to me.

Definately an all blow, no go example - but he likes it :S
