Modifications..........why?

I find the exhaust one an interesting one. So many people complain about the modified exhausts but don't mention bikes. IMO these are worse as standard a majority of them a just as loud if not louder than a lot of the modified exhausts.

The right exhaust note can be almost orgasmic (or is that just me :D ). The burble in low revs from the likes of a Scooby or Evo is blinding. Then you hear the likes of a Maserati giving some heavy right foot treatment and the note again, albeit different is a wonder.

I'll hold my hands up and openly admit that the majority of my cars have had some form of exhaust treatment, whether it was just a nicer looking back box (1st Nova) rather than the pee shooter or the 4" 'downpipe' from the numerous Golfs, each played their own part, in their own way.

Not just you, but you will never get "the right exhaust note" from a 1.0l Coarser or No Go.

The exhaust on my celica is rather loud but only under a decent amount of throttle so its not too bad and i like to think its a pretty decent noise :)

I know that Ken, a 3 pot Corsa just sounds like the exhaust is blowing.

I remeber watchin McLaren video about making of the MP4-12C. They had an acoustician DESIGNING a sepcific exhaust note! He had all the sophisticated kit, car was sitting in reverb controlled cell full of specialist mics and sound studio gear. That chap was seriously getting off on the exhaust note. For me nirvanna descends when I hear 9.3 ltr classic muscle V8 big block revving up though large bore exhaust - no need for drugs or booze :D

I've been watching this thread with interest.. In my opinion modifying cars is more like a disease that you never recover from, once you get the bite you never stop even though you keep telling yourself to... I would call myself a serial modifier, I'm not talking about stupid exhaust systems and cold air induction kits like most of the fabia and octavia owners seem to know and love, all that stuff is pointless rubbish which gain you very little, I'm more into the whole getting the biggest ****** engine I can find into the smallest car I can find, and you'd be amazed at how many people have paid me 4 figure numbers in the past to do it for them..

the oddest thing is this, I still skint myself all the time playing with rusty old sheds which are worth less than my shoes, but I don't really drive all that fast any more, I feel a bit more fragile than I did when I was 20... I'm musing on the fact that now I can afford to insure the cars I always wanted when I was a nipper I don't really want those cars after all now and would rather go back to the 1.0 Renault that I started driving with...

I don't agree with the list of categories of modified people a few pages back, personally I see it in more black and White terms than that, there are only 3 types of modifiers

1. People with big cheque books and **** for brains

2. ricers with rattle cans who believe that chipping improves mpg and shop in halfords

3. Salt of the earth types who scavenge scrapyards for parts and do it all themselves.

A twist to this - Annoying as a loud exhaust maybe to live with, it actually gets people noticed on the roads (good or bad). So they'll react to your presence, by slowing down or speeding up or get out the way, either way they know that your there, which is a good thing for safety.... :giggle:

From my experience (just up the road from Chavham) the exhaust gets you noticed for all the wrong reasons. The local police pull the car in question over, give it a thorough going over nose-to-tail, including an insurance check. They're not overly quick in doing this either.

I like your Category 3 TT.

What about

1.1 People with not so big cheque books (or very small ones) but still with ****e for brains

2.1 Ricers with brand new cars who believe chipping, loud exhaust, mahoosive brakes ... (ad as required)

With your comment re driving fast - doing it on public roads is no fun at all and very stressfull as instead of enjoying yourself your have your eyes peeled for the law and other road users. Makes it pointles in my book. Unless of course you drive in Germany with aware drivers around you.

I'd rather pay for a track day where you HIRE all the kit for the day and have completely worry free fun day :)

oh yer, i wasnt having a dig at you, you obviously aren't short of a few quid, your skoda goes into a special category all of it's own entitled "why didn't skoda think of this, they would shift thousands of them?"
