Grill Painting - (Cheap) Plastidip Alternative

Featured Replies

Evening all.

Sure some people will be interested in this. A while back I found a tin of Halfords Flexible Vinyl paint in the cellar (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchCmd?srch=vinyl+paint&action=search&storeId=10001&catalogId=10151&langId=-1).

Test sprayed a patch onto a spare grill surround I had and it looked good and was going to do the rest but with it being an old tin, the nozzle had clogged up so it was a no-go.

Fast forward to this weekend and since I was in Halfords raiding their Autoglym stocks, I thought I'd get another tin and give it another crack. 3 layers done yesterday and left overnight to cure and its spot on! Does what Plastidip does (no prep and you can scratch it off with your finger nail if you really give it some) but for less than a tenner and you don't need to order via eBay etc. Comes in a load of colours too.

Just thought people might want to know ;)

Will get pics of mine this weekend hopefully.

Thanks, worth a look.

iiiiiiiinteresting...

look forward to the pics

Dave could you spray something metal with it please

The website says its for plastics only so may not be any good for alloys.

Could you do a test?

I'll try but i wasn't bothered about that as it was purely for my grille.

No I understand what you've done and why you've done it.

I'm just wondering if the website is full of poo and it will actually work on metal or not

Leave it with me ;)

Just in the process of spraying my grill with this - hope it peels off should i not like it!

Forgot about this! I sprayed my grille quickly (and as a result, badly). Gave it a very light sanding and ready to put another coat or two on tonight but overall it looks like a great option. Cheap, slightly gloss finish and easy to remove with finger nails ( but not so easy it'll fall off when washed etc). Pics tomorrow...

Already got a stone chip on it. Gonna be a lot of scraping off methinks. Doesn't seem any different to normal paint.

Gonna bite the bullet and get plastidip I think.

It does however look awesome in black.

As said, I did mine badly and since I was down at the body shop today, thought I'd ask if they could paint it. They said they could but it'd chip off really easily but the guy in the unit next door does vinyl stickers/signs etc and he can wrap it but was gonna charge £40! To hell with that.

Just spent the last hour scraping it all off ready to paint it again with this stuff properly. I can tell you, its a right bugger to get off (had 4 coats on).

How much do you think I would need to do the grill as well as the rubbing strips (on all 4 doors and both bumpers) for a pre-fl Mk2?

Cheers in advance

Do you need to get rid of the chrome first?

Why do people use products like plastidip rather than just prime and paint? Any reason or just ease of use?

No, just clean it before spraying.

Cheaper and less hassle if it gets chipped.

and it'll just peel right off if you change your mind or colour scheme or want to revert to standard

Just my tuppence worth, I've used both the "Plastidip" and "Rust-Oleum" products on various things on my Abarth, mirror covers, boot handle, front whisker etc and much prefer the Rust-Oleum, easier to apply/peel.

Been approx 6 months since I last applied it and still looks as fresh today, a cheap mod, and totally reversible.
