Stuck Steering

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I just bought a second hand Octy. It was a great ride till recently

when the steering started to get stuck.

I realise that this happens only when the car slows down and also when I am turning left.

At times when i do a full lock to the right doing a three point turn and turning to the left it gets stucks too!!!

It seems like everytime either it slows down or when the brake is applied does this happen.

Any idea???

Something to do with the capliers or the rack and pinon???

Kid

Are you saying the steering can't turn or that the car doesn't move?

Do you have power steering?

Just trying to clarify.

If you can't turn the steering wheel then I would guess it could either be the rack or the power steering pump is on the way out.

If the car momentarily slows and then goes back to normal sounds like you have warped disks. I guess this is at walking speeds?

Sounds like a job for Big K....................

Job for a garage I am afraid !!

Sounds to me like either a faulty Power steering pump or a loose drive belt

(Check the fluid level, just in case)

Thanks for the input.

It's not exactly stuck but I had to use more force to turn it......

It's like additional resistance.

Check the fluid level and it's ok....

I am only afraid if it's rack and pinon...$$$$$

Hopefully its just the pump or the belt slipping.

if steering is heavier when engine speed in slowing down sounds to me like a pump problem.

Don't take any chances with your steering, I think I'd have someone look at it sooner rather than later. Not wishing to cause alarm but I witnessed a car with steering problems outside my house a few days ago.

I live by a "T" junction, smallish sort of roads in the middle of a residential area. I heard the sound of tyre squeal and looked up from my desk (I work from home) just in time to see a Ford Fiesta bouncing up a kerb and colliding into a neighbour

Thanks guys....

Will bring it to the local dealer right away....

Went to the dealer but he could not find any fault.

Was unable to reproduce the exact scenerio.

But I do believe it is the pump....anyway to rectify or check???

It doesn't just play up when it's wet, does it? That would indicate a slipping belt. I seem to remember one of my Modeo's did it when it had a leak on one of the valves.

Caused by the dealer, of course......

nope it happens wet or dry just when slowing down.

I believe Big K was right when he indicated it is the pump.

But not sure how to check it.Any ideas???

How old is the car, what's the mileage, and do you have any warranty left on it? If not, is it within 6 months of warranty expiring?

If so give us a ring on 0845 7745 745, there may well be help if the repairs are pricey. I'm back on Monday, happy to help if I can.

Get the car to an approved garage ASAP for a proper diagnosis, and see what they say. keep me posted, ok?

Got to admire your efforts LadyLoki -- but the Kid lives in Singapore - I don't think Skoda UK would be very happy to contribute to his car

But you are right - he should take it to a garage -- it sounds very much like pump failure -- I would suggest replacement of pump & belt -- also check belt tensioner.

SINGA-BLOODY-PORE???

*Ashamed of self for not reading more carefully*

Hope you get it sorted Kid.

Bearing in mind recent more important things............(or not)...you are excused

but only for now -- we want to see a much stronger, happier & lifeloving LadyLoki from now on -- OK ?

By the sounds of the journal - you are doing just that -- Good luck to you -- you deserve it

and if Skoda won't play the game -- just let us know and we will bombard them with complaints !!!!

Edited to say -- sorry if I'm not making sense, but I am rather P1ssed at the moment......free whisky from a customer...would have been rude to refuse :D

 You're not p1ssed until you start mis-typing like some of my "post 11pm" posts of before.

On the subject though, I used to get stuck steering on my old TDI ZX - I think it turned out to be faulty power steering pumps because it would tighten up on really slow/standing manouveres, and suddenly free up once it got really tight. Was a bit scary TBH.
