Alarm not working: any suggestions?

Featured Replies

Hey all

I've got no idea when this stopped working or what might be the cause, but my alarm isn't working (well, the internal sensor isn't, at least),

I was tipped off by my cat, who had snuck in there for the night somehow. When I opened the car in the morning a huge fur-ball flew past me, turned, starred, and gave me a rather disgusted look. Thankfully she hadn't expressed her 'gratitude' on my seats! On the way to work, the lightbulb sprang..."how on earth did she avoid setting off the internal alarm sensor?!"

Since then I've tested it by locking the car with me in it, and by shoving my arm through the windows when it is locked. Yes, the windows were open!

Nothing.

What could it be? Where is the sensor?

Cheers

Danny

The internal sensor is next to the sunglasses holder / interior lights (behind the slits / vents). Is your drivers door LED flashing when you lock the car, or does it not light up or stay lit constantly?

As above most faults are indicated through the LED on the drivers door.

The siren box is a weak point on older Octavia's but then the hazards should still flash.

Flashes when locked. I wonder if it has become disconnected somehow.

Does it keep flashing though, or flash and then stay constantly lit? Do you have access to vagcom / vcds?

On my last VRs 2010 plate the alarm had to be replaced. the lights would flash but no siren. the LED on the door doesn't flash correctly either (i think it doesn't fash rapidly and then slowly).

Search on here as there is a thread about alarms which i posted on.

No access to vagcom/VCDS sadly.

It does precisely this!

I would say (it happened to me btw) the interior monitoring sensors have no communication. Locate the fuse in the fusebox, remove, wait ten seconds, and replace. Should be sorted. Alarm status LED should then flash rapidly and then slowly flash once locked.

Will give that a go tomorrow - cheers

I think that is exactly what mine did.

Of course it might not work, and something could actually be broken, in which case contact you local VCDS'er for help. (I'm available for the North Wales area btw...)

Thanks for the offer. I'll give the fuse suggestion a whirl and then go from there.

Welsh_kai, was it the sensor that was replaced on yours?

I think it was the whole horn assembly fitted in the wing.

OK, cheers. I read the other thread too and i think mine is a sensor issue. No siren goes off, but neither does the hazards.

It might all be related, the lights would flash on mine. VCDS is your best bet and avoids the guess work.

nutters_uclan,

This thread should be useful to you - look at post 8 by mikeholroyd:

OK, it's done!

I love Briskoda and I love MikeHolroyd! That guide was spot on and after simply blowing the sensors and connectors, it's all up and running again.

So glad Skoda were denied the opportunity to sting me for £180+ ...although I'm sure they'll get me again one day soon!

It is on the FL too

says in my manual that the siren should be replaced after 6 years

If you have a later car with maxidot best thing to do to ensure the siren is working is to set the alarm chirp when locking/unlocking the car; the alarm uses the siren to produce the chirp; if it stops chirping its more than likely failed. It also keeps it working on a regular basis which is probably better than it rarely having to do anything.

It is also quite common for the alarm systems in recent VAG cars to throw the occasional hissy, on my MK5 and MK6 Golf on a couple of occasions ive come back to the car to find the LED no longer blinking but fully lit; like its encountered a problem; unlocking and locking the car cleared it. Did wonder if perhaps it is a visual notification that the alarm has been triggered but dont think thats the case.

Also worth noting (though most people should know this) if you press lock twice not only do you disable the deadlocks but you also deactivate the alarm; car still imobilised but it is effectively just locked with no deadlock or alarm protection.

I didn't this until recently either, and had a tendency to press the fob multiple times 'just to make sure'. Doh!

thats handy to know. I attend a lot of car shows and compete in the db drag competition where car alarms which dont have a valet mode are a constant hindrance lol
