Correct XL tyre pressures?

Featured Replies

Anyone have any thoughts on this - fitted 225/45/17 Goodyear Eagles F1 Asymmetric(2) but with the XL rating (on a VRS estate).

2 different opinions from Skoda garages. One says they need more air, the other says standard pressures (2.2 at the front, 2.0 at the back). Searching various tyre forums is a minefield of different info. Is anyone running XL themselves or actually knows for sure? I think the Eagles are a bit soft and could do with a smidge more pressure (just a feel for them over the 100miles done since fitted) but currently sticking with what it officially quotes on the car sticker!

I have Toyo Proxy 4's fitted all round and I run them at 30 Psi, front and rear.

stick with standard recommended pressues

I always run my 225/45/17 XL's at 32psi all round. Winters should be inflated a few psi higher.

I believe the standard tyre pressures are determined by vehicle weight, XL tyres just have stiffer side walls capable of carrying slightly higher loads for the given tyre size. So in theory the factory pressures on the fuel flap are right for size irrespective of XL rating. In real world usage it may be different.

Ended up with XL rated PS3's on my Fabia vRS (didn't go seeking the XL rating though) and they made for a much crashier ride, only went on due to availability. Don't think I'd have them again though having had the experience.

+1 always have done.

Thanks for the advice - far better (real life) wisdom on here than any amount of phonecalls to garages. The Goodyear Eagles seem a touch softer than what I've had on the Octy so going purely by feel alone they do seem in need of a little more air. Sounds like start off with the original manufacturer spec and then perhaps adjust to 'taste' once they have bedded in.

Appreciate all the feedback.

I generally go standard pressure then drop a couple of PSI from the rear (unless you are often loaded)

32 all round on the same size as you, running Michelin primacy hp which are extra load.
