1.4 twincharger.. best engine in the world!

I have to agree Sharkrider, it would seem the less care given to these cars the less hassle you get, we got high 40's mpg on the way down and then thrashed around the track and drove home, same brake fade and when I did check the oil it had used......... NONE.

I'm not familiar with the Fabia II dash, is that the Oil Consumption that you're showing? ;)

Yeah, modern turbo petrol economy is certainly catching up with diesel. I am being drawn closer to switching from the black pump.

plus, even though it should have 98 RON fuel, I put sainsbury's super in , and was gobsmaked that it was £1.34 :o dont know how much deisel is at the moment...

Looking forward to how fast now, I will be changing brake fluid and possibly the wheels and tyres for the Golf wheels, the wife is a bit miffed the brakes don't work today when she was going to work :bandit: I will change the fluid this week so as I can use the car again lol.

The green ones are definitely the best

I thought you were getting a new one?

me or James? I am... but it hasn't even got a build date yet :( old minty will be doing a few more meets yet! lol..

Brakes were my only problem too. Saw almost 10mpg on track and oil temp was well above 120. Let it cool down and I checked it and none used. Got just out of the circuit and on came the fuel light. There was a Shell within 5 miles so brimmed the tank and reset. Was another 10 or so miles back to the motorway where I saw 48.8mpg without trying. Back to motorway speeds it was around 40mpg which I was happy with.

No new car for me, ours has only done 6500 miles, it isn't even run in yet!

bob on Martyn , just like mine :) my oil temp got to 117 lol.... think you were going a bit quicker than me ;)

Was glad I turned off traction control. The XDS feels a lot better when it's not restrained so pushed it a bit harder the normal, not caring if I trashed a set of tyres as I'm due a new set on the front soon. Not bad given it's two sessions they've done and had hard use even over Winter. If it doesn't use much oil over Summer I can see me keeping it a bit longer.

I had Jason change my XDS settings to "strong" just before the session, and although it doesn't feel like it gives any mechanical sympathy, it completley illiminates power understeer! was well impressed :) one of the first things I will be doing to the new car.

I think the XDS turned upto setting 2 on mine could well have contributed to my steering rack failing.

I was researching on some US forums about the MkV GTI XDS and others have had similar issues with steering racks.

what is this voo doo you guys are speaking about?

Will it benefit on track but be covert to the wife when she drives?

interesting...... It does feel like alot more energy is going through everything than just understeer with you thenbacking off or modulating the throttle...... any more info on knackered racks would be good.... however, it would be a small ammount of time percentage wise that my car would be treated this harshly... yours has been tracked much more....

the wife wouldn't notice ;) from standard the XDS is a bit slow.... you will get power understeer, and any driver worth his salt would control it before the XDS kicks in... with it turned to strong, I found you could simply floor the throttle on the exit of corners (especially in rain) and it would be more aggressive braking the spinning wheel, thus reducing power understeer on exit..... felt a bit harsh to the car though......... alot of energy going through the diff ect ....

It does make a big difference. I think the more aggressive XDS setings paired to bigger brakes on mine, whilst still being calibrated to stock sized rotors might have also been the route cause of the torque steer that i experience. My XDS is now turned off. YOu can also adjust the brake assist as well, although i wasnt a huge fan as i like to get the amount of brakingpower that i apply not what the ECU thinks i want to have.

In VCDS Select Control Module, go to 03 ABS Brakes, then 10 Adaptation, go to Channel:

Channel 09 Brake Assist

There are 3 settings for this 0-center (stock setting) 1-small 2-hard

I changed this from the stock 0 setting to 2 and this has made the brake pedal more responsive to smaller inputs. Feels more positive in use, especially under enthusiastic motoring.

Channel 36 XDS

There are 3 settings 0-center (stock setting) 1-weak 2-strong

Again I changed this from 0 to 2 and this one mod alone makes the Polo into a different/better beast under hard driving. It acts almost like my ED30 did with the Quaife and yet doesn't feel as fidgety. Seems more planted around bends and that much better to push through the corner on exit. This mod comes with a five thumbs up...

I was asked if I wanted to change the pedal pressure, I declined, as I like it the way it is....

17k mileage in two years, probably 10k of which is motorway. It doesnt get driven hard on public roads, thats why i do trackdays, of which its done 9 altogether, typically 70-80 laps per trackday, 3 or 4 of which were soaking wet days. About 5 of these were on 100% stock suspension. I wouldnt ay that its had an especially hard time at all tbh. Driving hard on rough and bumpy public roads is probably alot harsher than driving hard on a smooth circuit.

Basically I had a knock when on full lock turning left. Almost like someone clicking their fingers. I asked them to look into it, but they couldnt replicate it on the ramps which makes diagnosing an issue awkward. Next thin I know is the Steering rack has failed completely along withthe power steering pump. No resistance when turning left at all, impossibly hard to turn it right. Loads of metal swarth and filings had passed though the power steering pump as well whiich id imagine is why that failed as well. The steering racks were on back order at all the dealerships and is a known issue according to the VW techs.

This is the main reason the car is going. Id say my car has had an easy life compared to what i would normally subject a car. 9 trackdays in 2 years is less than half of what i normally do had i been in the country more often this last 2 years. So if its failed after only 9 trackdays, and as above 3 or 4 were wet so even easier on the car, then is it going to go in another 9 trackdays, especially now my car has all the other suspension goodies fitted to it now. Considering this is costing me over £1200 in parts alone at COST price. I can deal with misfires and the oil burning as we have done things to remove the issue completley, but the steering rack cant be upgraded.

Shame because it handles like an absolute dream now.

What?

I don't believe what I'm reading

You mean you didn't sit and warm it up like a racing driver, you never once checked your oil temperature during the trip

It can't be true, I tell you :giggle:

I did check the oil temp but only so I could tell Jabo how hot it got.

Sharkrider, with 51 mpg you either were pootling along at 50mph holding tractors up or you were going downhill more often than not :D;) !

James's MPG is more like mine when I drove at NSL for 50 miles along M25 yesterday. With 50mph average speed cams I got to 45 mpg. Then I HAD to boot it and it dropped down to 36 mpg

I have to visit my dealers before "How Fast?" to get that oil temp back on Maxidot - I am not sure how I am surviving without it to be honest!

Interesting read about experiences with power steering settings. I did notice "funny" behaviour of the steering recently. No torque steer from traffic like GP but at higher speeds on max acceleration it is seriously sensitive to any steering input and offloaded wheel looses grip too easily causing an effect as if the steering suddenly lightened up or your front lifted (like due to aero, which happens anyway under top speeds anyways) and I need to correct. I like traction control in the corners though except for the fact it lets the power back in a little to late for my liking, too conservative - but does splendid job at saving rubber and keeping you out of armco.

If anybody at "How Fast?" is going to bring the ODBII tool I will try the XDS settings on track if time allows. I am afraid if I turn traction control off I will leave the track with much shallower tread than I'd like to despite being undoubtedly faster :(.

AND of course it is the best engine in the world - it got Engine of The Year Awards 5 times for a reason !

Proof that Dave has the best stock engine in a mk2 :) Goes like a rocket, sips fuel, and uses oil for lubrication only.

When you sell it, I think SUK should take it apart, and find out what they did different when they built yours so that they can fix the rest of them :)
