RNS510 in octavia VRS 2007

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Im sure this has been done to death already but im looking at buying an RNS510 off ebay and fitting it to my Octavia VRS 2007, now my questions are as follows....

1. Will i get the battery drain issue?

2. Will I get the climate and OPS displayed on it? (currently I have the stream audio unit and they display on there fine)

I know you may need the CAN version to tell me for sure if the stereo will work but if someone can tell me the revision that doesnt have this issue then it would be appreciated.

1. I think (I may be wrong) that you'll need either a gateway upgrade OR theres a firmware update which prevents battery drain.

2. No. PDC display is a major job changing the parking sensors and the control unit. Climate can be displayed depending on the firmware version (I think) and you'd need to fit a facelift climate panel (and subsequently, a FL fascia).

Well, well, well worth doing though. You won't miss the climate and PDC displays - I don't. Best thing I've done to my car (so far  ).

Best to do a search as it has been done to death.

1. Need to know which CAN version you have. I work on anything from an L onwards "should" be OK (some people say K onwards but ive had to replace a K).

2. Unless you update the PDC controller you WONT get anything on the display

Thanks guys, ive have been searching around plenty but there seems to be so much conflicting information I decided to ask outright..

I will post my can version once im home, I get a feeling it may be before K so ill have to replace it if thats the case, I wouldnt mind retaining the PDC though as I do use it quite a lot (parking is an issue around where I live and the display helps) I assume I will need to get VCDS and code it once changed? (PDC controller and Stereo)

Thanks for the advice so far..

If it starts looking like it will cost loads and involve changing too much I may go the ZENEC route or Dynavin D99 (anyone used these?)

Hi Octymark, here is my VCDS info on my CAN gateway, can you tell me if im good to go?

Address 19: CAN Gateway Labels: 1K0-907-530.lbl

Part No SW: 1K0 907 530 H HW: 1K0 907 951

Component: J533__Gateway H12 0150

Revision: H12 Serial number: 31001066191552

With an 'H' gateway you will need either a new CAN it modified firmware for the Columbus.

Have to say that this is the oldest version I've come across on a 2007 model!

If you have a Stream MP3 unit that currently shows OPS then the Columbus should also do so (at least mine did).

A new gateway isn't going to break the bank

You'd be the man to know!

Thanks for the info guys, with all the hassle of having to change CAN gateways etc and poss PDC gateway im looking at going the Zenec route or something along those lines... When you total up the cost of RNS510 with replacement CAN and bluetooth/IPOD control etc then its not far off the Zenec

Appreciate the info though

As alreay answered you ideally need to change a H. That is quite an old revision on a 2007 car.

Eddie-NL is the guy to contact. He can supply you with a pre-coded can and you can fir it yourself. On a 2007 car its easy enough to do yourself and it will be plug and play from Eddie.

You are right to do the sums. When you add it all up its a hefty chunk of money and there are alternatives. It just comes down to how OEM you want the car to be?

I looked at the Zenec, Pioneer and cheap Chinese clones that did everything and decided that going OEM was for me (despite limitations of the sat nav on the Columbus) as I could add the BT and iPod at a later date and spread the cost.

I've had a Chinese clone in my vrs for 2 and half years with no major problems apart from it can be fiddly to use.

Have now decided to part/ex for a audiosources ans 810 which sounds like a decent piece of kit, after reading some of the reviews.

It looks a lot easier to use than what I have now, and the interface is nearly identical to a rns 510, hoping to have it my vrs before the end of the month !

At £366 and 2 year warranty, its hard to beat, plug and play.

No can gateway to worry about...

Thanks all,

Studmuffin, ive looked at these on ebay too and have held off as I couldnt find decent reviews.. let me know what you make of this once you have it and I may go that route if it turns out to be good... are you selling your old one or has it gone already?

The clone one you have does it do the PDC and climate?

You can get a Columbus which has a firmware patch to avoid the battery drain issue, there's some for sale on ebay which would save the hassle of changing the gateway (I have a MY2007 car with an 'H' gateway as well which I was a bit miffed about) although that doesn't help with BT/Ipod.

Upgrading the parking sensors is a much more involved job than just changing the gateway, the sensors themselves need upgraded as well as new modules and wiring. I can't remember it all off the top of my head as I read a topic on it here where someone stepped through the process they were going through to upgrade their system and it didn't seem worth it. It's a few months since I looked at the Zenec but from memory I think it only supports the newer optical sensors, not the older acoustic system but may well be wrong there - I would carefully check that.

I believe the OP already has OPS functioning on their current HU.

To the best if my knowledge, and my experience, this will automatically work on the Columbus. No mods needed.

I had a Stream MP3, installed the Columbus then added front & rear PDC/OPS which worked fine. When I refitted the Stream temporarily it also displayed in there.

Without knowing the exact set up of the OP I can't say it will definatley work, but if OPS already exists then why should anything need changing just because the HU has been changed?

There are also people I've helped who have modified their PDC to get OPS and, while its not simple, it is a question of a new controller and swapping a few wires around. No changing if sensors was needed in these examples. There are quite detailed threads on here about it.

As for the climate being displayed, I have no experience to go off.

What is this CAN Gateway, dont understand this stereo jargon at all ......cheers:(

The CANBUS Gateway is like a central controller that channels communications to all the other controllers.

It's not part of the stereo.

Be vary wary of buying one on ebay 40 a week are being ripped out (40 seconds is all it takes) around by me and a need replacement is £2500 I would buy from a breaker but not anyone else. It could be yours next time. Pentagon Suppaglass fitted for that reason .Mates got his knicked works car park

40 Columbus units stolen a week? Where did that figure come from?

£2500 is wrong. The factory fit option may be that much, but that includes additional aerial amps and a GPS shark fin antenna and additional cabling as well.

http://www.skodateile.cz/index.php?pg=product∏=263&menu=Škoda%7COctavia%20II%28A5%29%20facelift%7CAudio%20a%20Navi

£1034 GBP + postage.

I believe dealer price is around £1800-2000, but that's only what I've heard not what I've actually found out for myself.

There is a company in this country that will supply & fit for around £650. As an established business, I can't see them handling stolen good.

And there's one for sale on this forum at the moment for £400 IIRC. No idea of its origins or the seller as I have nothing to do with the sale.

1500 is a replacement ie bring faulty one in and and swap for that price .2500 is the price fitted as a replacement from vw, no need for a shark fin as R36 has built in rear screen . Fact about stolen ones, Morrison `s hq alone 35 stolen in a week, Mates car park one a day . Please find the details of that dealer as my mate still has a gaping hole .The nearest decent legit replacement is the Kenwood DAB http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/vw/

The problem still is these are stolen so readily and easily security is a joke .My VW dealer removes them from cars in the forecourt and LW graphics fits Suppaglass to a car every day to prevent the thefts :wall:

What you also have to remember I'd if its being nicked chances are the looms will be cut. This means you end up needing a new loom

My brothers father in law had his nab stolen from a crv. The bill to replace 6k! Car was written off!

The clone one you have does it do the PDC and climate?

Im going to part/ex the unit with the guy I originally bought it from for the ans 810 which is the 8 inch screen, the link I posted is the ans 510 which has only a 6.5 inch screen...

My unit doesn't have pdc or climate control but the ans does have all these feature's plus steering wheel controls.

I have done quite a lot of research and have been on the vw forums, to find out about these ' cheap chinese clones ' and yeah I have to agree with some of the guys on here that some of them are rubbish...

But if you do your research and buy the right unit from the right place...

Then you will have a great unit with the same functionality of some of the units that have already have been mentioned for a fraction of the cost...

KBphot is correct in assuming I already have PDC displayed on the Stream unit when I reverse, I also have climate control displayed.. so by changing the head unit why do I have to upgrade the CAN etc for these to work again?

I`m now looking at the autoradio ANS810 as the best all round option? any ideas on it?

CAN needs to be upgraded to avoid battery drain, not to get OPS/PDC on the Columbus.

Modified firmware is available that obviates the need for a CAN upgrade.

I didn't assume. You said it in your original post!
