Using tablets as sat nav........stupid or what?

Featured Replies

Drove into town yesterday and was following a bloke in, of all things, a Mk2 Superb

I could clearly see that he was running sat nav from what must have been at least a 7" tablet, if not bigger, upright on top of his dash, such that it virtually filled the gap between dash and rear view mirror, thereby causing a massive blind spot in forward vision

Hence the question, stupid or what?

Swear I have seen a driver using an iPad as a sat nav once - but yes the visibility issue is critical. We've had many a HGV pulled over by VOSA for routine checks and been given PG9s for having sat nav units in the line of vision and not in the lower corner. About time the Police started doing the same to car drivers.

Guy in a Focus passed me this morning with his jacket hanging up on a coat hanger on the front passenger hook? God knows how he was going to see when he got to road junctions or wanted to use his mirror.

Using a tablet as navigation system isnt that bad, all the screens in the cars are getting bigger too.

BUT putting any device in the line of vision is plain stupid!!

Even though my sat nav is on my rear view mirror I do sometimes use my 6" phone as a sat nav, but this is linked into the car so it's slightly more useful than a plain sat nav, I personaly don't think it's that stupid if you had the pad in the first place (before the new phone I did use my 9" Android pad as a sat nav. I did always put the pad/phone just above the radio, so the idea of putting it in the line of vision is slightly unusual.

If something is worth fitting, its worth fitting properly.

( i mean like in this iQ from California)

For the UK, there are plenty using a variety of screens in the front of cars and being used by drivers while driving.

Not long now until there will be some kind of Law or Regulation change i would expect.

I have seen plenty Large Tablets used in 4x4's etc for offroad navigation use,

and was there when an Officer went ape when checking one over at a Roadside stop during a competition and a transit between Off Road sections,

to be honest the Interior should have been the least of the problems.

I want use tablet for SatNav as TomTom is plain too small for me and I have to refocus my eyes too much to see what the hell is hoing on on the display. When I drive with passenger she/he dos the navigation duties :).

Thing is such dispalys should be located as close to your normal line of sight as possible without obscuring the field of vision.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem people using them if they are sited correctly, but this one was literally end on, sat on top of the dash

If the traffic lights had stayed red a little longer I'd have got a picture, as I had my camera with me

If you had a tablet mounted on your dash, you could have taken a picture with the tablet's built in camera ;)

Here's how to mount a tablet. Korban's, I saw this at Combe and it looks really good IMOpost-73816-0-70275600-1368018548_thumb.jpg

Yep, liked it as well. Very good build thread!

The same as the people with normal satnavs who put the directly in front of them, above the 12oclock position of the wheel. Ridiculous.

Made me chuckle, people like that really exist?

I must admit first time I heard about it and never seen anything like that - I'd probably have to pull over as driving and laughing so hard would be dangerous :D

I'v seen a few over the years, I was too gobsmacked to laugh at the time lol

I've encountered one or two who go into one after a MOT fail. I've even seen one sat nav bracket Araldited to the middle of the windscreen, that wouldn't come off without causing some serious damage.

a hammer, then fail them again for having a cracked windscreen :p

Nearly as bad as the number of drivers I see at night, with the satnav on daytime brightness, illuminating most of the cabin :wonder:

That's gobsmacking! I've seen some random and dangerous use of phones and tablets, but that really takes the biscuit :wall:

Do you have Sec 172 notices in Scotland?

If so, it's simple to find the registered keeper, send him a notice, and he'll either have to accept it's him or lie/BS his way out

I think the keepers door will have been chapped already.

& if mummy is fronting the insurance on the 1242cc Fiesta Freedom that might be an issue.

Dammit, that truly is unbelievable... I keep underestimating how stubbornly some peope refuse to use their brains, provided they have any left. That future road killer (as he will cause a fatality sooner or later) should be banned from driving for life. Some people should not really be allowed behind the wheel!

Check out this bell end then :wall:

Just seen George posted it aswell, but here you can see his reg so we can avoid him

Good. I hope they throw the book at him. Or a Kindle.

Should be given a sine die ban IMO.
