VRS Replacement engine questions

Hi Folks,

I've had my 2011 vRS (with a CAVE engine) for two years, bought as a demo with 1600m on it now done 17,500m. Used vast quanties of oil from new, but I just accepted it as a high performance small engine. Took it for its second service and mentioned it to the dealer. Did the first oil tests -failed, did the 600 miles and then another test, failed. Fitted breather kit, did 600miles, tested again today still using oil. New engine being fitted on Monday. Brilliant customer service!

Will I get the later engine?

Should I ask for a new cat?

Do they reprogamme the ecu for the new engine?

What warranty have others got on their new engines?

Any thoughts on running it in?

When they take the engine out, will they have to drain the gearbox oil? Tempted to ask them to do an early DSG oil and filter change to prolong its life.

Any advice thoughts greatfully received!

Are you getting a comets engine replacement or do called "short engine" i.e. just the block where all ancillaries are retained? It might be a reconditioned unit as well

I'd insist on CTHE replacement motor if possible.

With so much oil going through your cat it is bound to have it's life span shortened in best case and is potentially creating considerable exhaust gases flow restriction

Running in I done following advice from race tuners.

Stay in manual, shift to high gears and apply full throttle but without stepping on the kick down switch-full throttle is much earlier in the pedal travel. Do that from cold. First 50 miles are essential for correct rings bedding. Do not go over 2.4krpm initially, like first 300miles, then go to 3,5k for the next 200 miles when motor's hot. Then increase the revs when oil to working temp - you should be ready to red line at roughly 750 miles.

New engine should have the same 3 year warranty as if it came with new car.

Gearbox is sealed for life non-maintenance type.

Tell them you expect extended warranty as gesture of good will for all your wasted time coming to the dealers for oil testing, breather mods etc.

Is it even possible to drive it and stay under 2.4k revs!?

It is painful but possible :). Well worth it tough !

BTW, at 2,4k you have max boost, nearing 2.8bar absolute! Supercharger and Turbo work together, after that flap opens unloading supercharger and turbo slowly takes over where at 3,5k it goes solo.

Was told it is a new engine (new head block etc) with all the old ancilliaries banged on it.

I'll ask for the warranty ( which should then cover the cat) and check the engine code. If it's a CAVE then I will be checking the oil and expecting another engine change :)

Bit of a shame to change it as it's smooth, revvy and very quick.

Not all CAVE are oil drinkers. Plenty are very good! Ask for the cat to changed period. Other people had it done when engine was changed.

It should be the latest release engine but you will retain your old engine number so it will remain a CAVE unit but essentially it will be a CTHE unit. Yes the ECU will be updated to latest version (the box will more readilly drop down a gear or two when under load) so probably a DSG software update as well. Also pay special attention to the condition of your car when you drop it off. I'm feel certain the bonnet was removed when my engine was replaced and it is now scratched in some unusual places, and the fit is not as good as i think it should be.

Warranty, best of luck with that. Mine has been extended to 4 years (engine only) but still only up to 60,000 miles total for the car not the engine. However, if you were to fail an emission test particularly at the three year mark when the first MOT is due then I guess a degree of goodwill will be forthcoming. If not then skoda/VAG can expect a lot of bad publicity.

On the plus side, in the first 9000 miles after the new engine I only had to add 1 litre of oil :)

With that much oil being used, I'd be pushing for a new cat? Got a new turbo and cat with my new engine, but that was due to the missing bits of exhaust valve..

new cat, ext warranty, i think ive been done as the buggers would only give me a free service although after my letter im told there looking into it but i wont hold my breath

I know as I am writing one now regarding rear wiper motor - I've been waiting 3 months and counting for the warranty repair :(

Is there any way to tell the difference between the two engines?? Had mine replaced a few months ago but they had problems with it. Apparently Skoda sent out the wrong engine and had to wait for the correct engine. (They were advised by Skoda not to modify the old engine) Its only 10 months old so I'm not sure what engine it was suppose to come with from the factory. Thanks.

Left my car at the dealer today and got a lovely base Citigo that hasn't even got central locking. Nice sounding engine though.

Dealer tells me I'm getting a CAVE engine and a short engine at that:( no extended warranty on the engine and no mention to be made in the service book and I've got to tell the DVLA it's got a new engine number.

Ask them again.

Of course there will be a stamp in the service book.

Tell them they will be fitting a new Oil filter and oil so that is a Oil Change Service.

Tell them to note the Engine Numbers if any change and the information of the Engine and the Mileage on the car at

the time of the change.

Contact Skoda UK Customer Services and talk over with them what you are being told be who ever.

Is it the Service Desk or Workshop Manager you are speaking to?

Find out what is being fitted, new plugs, coils, airfilter etc.

That is all to be Put in the Service manual.

Easy enough for them to provide a copy of the Invoice that is going to Skoda to you for the cars records.

Its amazing how customers are being treated as tho its some favour being done for them, when actually customers need to start charging Skoda for the Failed Vehicles, Manufacturing or Parts Failures.

Some vehicles being sold are not of Merchantable Quality and many of these are

Ex Dealership Demonstrators.

Ask for your out of pocket Expenses, from Skoda UK,

possibly its time Skoda started putting in the Extended Warranty

as a Goodwill Gesture for the Customers being given the run around.

New engine has 3 years warranty, how else can it be???. All the work has to be recorded in car's documents. If Service book is not big enough copies of invoices/works sheets to be included. There's absolutely no reason why not and you PAID for that vehicle, new vehicle, not some old banger!

Skoda UK say that no extension of the vehicles warranty will be made in the event of an engine replacement and they won't give any additional warranty on the engine alone. It may be possible to get one year's warranty extension as a 'good will gesture' if you push. This is likely to be for the original owner (non transferable) and may be mileage restricted.

It is probably the view of many that this is not good enough and that Skoda/VAG owe their loyal customers more. After all, customers in China with 7 speed DSG gearbox problems are getting 10 year/160,000 km warranties. So it appears that VW are happy to look after a developing nation, whilst ignoring customers complaints closer to home.

Over sixty Briskoda members have reported oil consumption problems with the Mk2 Fabia vRS. Many have now had replacement engines. Extended engine and gearbox warranties should be expected, but more pressure will need to be exerted on Skoda/VAG before this will happen.

The Developing Nation had the plant building the DSG's that were faulty, so that is slightly different.

(Not sure that the richest Super Power in the world can be described as Developing.)

In the EU the EU Company needs someone to take a Court Action Against them.

Probably best done in the UK.

Sadly cars in Mainland Europe are already out of Manufacturers Warranty,

no idea what those owners are getting in the way of deals or if any are taking any Legal Actions against VAG.

.I think if i was driving a Far Eastern/Asian built car in their climate then i might give it a second thought.

But since most of us have EU built cars driving in Europe i can not see much problem.

If there was, hopefully it will be in so many more cases then Twincharger problems that VAG would have to behave better with Customers.

New engine fitted last week, no barcode on it so I can't tell which one it is. The mechanic that fitted it was also a MkII VRS owner, same age as my car and he said he just drives his hard and it doesn't use oil. He said if I'd asked they would have left the insulation off th supercharger :(

Not a mark on the car and no creaks rattles or squeeks so happy with that. No oil consumption problems yet even after 42 miles... Engine is significantly "tighter" feeling than the old engine - probably due to the piston rings having tighter tolerances?

Getting a copy of the free of charge invoice to go with the service record. Will be buying the 2 year warranty extension

My vrs had replacement engine back in January, seemed to be using very little oil at first, but now it's back to normal?? Since then we had major issue with gearbox that has been fixed after waiting a month. We did get extra year warranty as good will gesture though! Hope yours beds in ok?
