Lump in tyre wall - advice please

Featured Replies

Ladies & Gents,

As per title, I have just found a small lump in the NSF outside tyre wall. Raised about 2mm, about 5-7 mm wide and an inch long.

Have checked the inside of tyre - all good. The alloy seems ok. No idea when this happened, but hit a pothole under braking two weeks ago - I checked at the time and later that day and didn't see any damage, so this may have developed since or may be as a result of another road 'imperfection'.

You can guess the next question - do I need to replace a tyre that has any sidewall deformation at all? This is minor - I have seen much worse and changed tyre straight away - and the tyre is only 2mm worn at most?

Dunlop Sport Maxx RT 225/40 R18 92Y - yes, I know, a pricey business!

Thanks in advance guys!

Dunc.

Yep, time for a new tyre. Don't risk a blowout on the motorway that could kill you or someone else. I had to do the same with one of mine a while ago. a small raised bump on the inside wall.

Edit: It will fail the MOT in that state anyway.

Needs changing, the strength in the sidewall has been compromised.

New tyre.

Thought as much. Bummer, but better safe than sorry. Especially with the little ones in the car!

Cheers guys.

Absolutely....bin that tyre ASAP. And in the meantime I'd put the spare on.

Just found a treat in the garage.

A Conti 2 in the right size and speed rating courtesy of the father-in-law (previous vRS a couple of years ago) with a similar amount of tread to the damaged tyre. I'm fairly OCD about having the same make all round but, if I can save £110, I will.

Once all four are finished, I'll be back to four of the same. Michelin next time (via a Costco deal if I can).

Will change tomorrow before I pick the kids up from school - Mrs Dunc taking them in!

Thanks again guys. Always nice to hear what to do - even if I suspected as much already!

How old is the tyre you found,

How old is the tyre you found,

2 yrs. Have checked it - no cracks or signs of age. Think it should be good. Also, similar wear to the one it will be required to replace.

Good decision IMO. Punctures normally get the best tyre in my experience, but you'd kick yourself minimum if anything happened as a result of not changing it.

If it was caused by a pot hole. Claim of the local council, you need a pic of the hole.

Thanks. You're right.

Planning on popping up there tomorrow. The hole has been there for a while. It's on a braking point for a right turn.

Hopefully it's still there tomorrow!

Don't worry about a lump on the tyre, if you don't know what that implies, stick some Savlon on it and it'll be okay in the morning!

Couple too many chief?

Thank you kindly for your input! ;-)

I had a blow out in a hire car a few weeks ago that I strongly suspect was caused by a bulge in the tyre wall. This was the tyre after the blow out.

Apart from all the above advice re safety, it is an offence to have a tyre fitted with "a lump, bulge or tear caused by separation or partial failure of the structure" - 3 points and £60 fine, and the reason for this is because it is a safety issue.

Conti fitted this morning. It had 4mm across the tread. The damaged tyre had 5mm, so not too much lost.

Kwik Fit locally to me. £13 all in.

Have also photographed the offending pothole, so wish me luck with North Somerset Council!

Thanks for the advice all.

Cheers.

Good luck with North Somerset Council! :)

Worth noting that most councils will try to refuse paying out if they weren't aware of the pothole (i.e. needs to have been reported to them before the incident). So, if a friend reported it to them today and you hit it tomorrow, the claim is more likely to be a success ;)

I too suffered from a bit of a bulge, thanks to North Yorksire County Council's incompetence...

Just had to the sarcastic to such a stupid question " do I need to replace a tyre that has any sidewall deformation at all?"

Groans Silver! New tyre time.

I now know that any lump, however small, is due to a split in the layers that makes up the tyre and sidewall.

The air from the tyre fills the new void & then will work its way around the tyre wall - which will lead to a blow out.

The guy at Kwik Fit today was extremely helpful. Was worried about going there (new to the area, no decent car-related contacts yet) but was pleasantly surprised.

Good luck getting your car sorted!

Re the council claim, my pothole has been there for weeks! In a braking zone (turning right middle lane) on a fast (60 mph) country road for a right hand turn. Criminal!

Calm down friend! Not claiming to be a tyre expert.

That's why I asked for advice.

Just found one of these myself, bout the size of a 50p, raised maybe 1.5-2mm. Really p1ssed off, tyre's only 10 months old, covered maybe 7000 miles. It's a hankook ventus, reckon there's any point contacting the manufacturer?

I seem to have really sh1tty luck with tyres, lost one on a pothole, two due to bad tracking, one sidewall knackered off a kerb and now this! About the only saving grace is the fact I have a part-worn spare due to the kerbing incident as I got two new ones put on, so that's being used to replace the one with the lump in.

Lump in sidewall means failure of the structure, dangerous and illegal. 3 points and fine

Oh look a Dunlop with a bulge in. The garage where the family cars are serviced say they've been seeing this on Dunlops for the last 40 years.
