Felicia - Unfinished Business

Featured Replies

Thought i'd start one of these and see if i can/need to keep it updated

When i bought my Monte Carlo Fabia recently i came back to Briskoda.

I have been a quiet member for a number of years through owning the following Skodas:

Felicia 1.6 GLXi - 97 Blue

Octavia Vrs mk1 - 51 Silver

Octavia Vrs mk2 - 06 Race Blue

Fabia Monte Carlo - 11 Red/Black (owned currently)

I'd had the fabia 6 months and something wasn't right, i was missing my last car (golf r32). So i started looking around at anything and everthing performance, old and newer, until i settled on an Astra VXR....

Until this clean Felicia came up for sale and i felt it was time for me to complete some unfinished business! I'd always wanted more go from my 1.6 :D

So VXR was off the menu and the Felicia 1.3 popular was bought :D

I'd like to thank the previous owner for finding and maintaining this unusually clean and low mileage example, and for selling it to me :)

I will be using this daily, but plans have started on some upgrades

Gaz coilovers ordered.

General plans/prep for more power (really hope to follow this through)

Now for some pics, they're from the For Sale ad (hope the seller doesn't mind) as i haven't taken any myself yet.....

Have you got the V5 donor for yours yet pal?

Unsure on the wheels atm, looking at all sorts. If anyone has some Fun alloys, though, i may be interested...

Still no pics of my own despite having some decent weather.

Still waiting delivery on coilovers, but had a call from Gaz late last week, so they may be getting built now :)

Anyway another order placed update, a pair of these little fellas for the front.

So i had to abort my attempt to get my coilovers on, info here

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/280463-coilover-fitting-help/

I'm going to order some Focus top mounts and see what they look like, may get away with a hybrid setup or have to fully convert and use them complete.

Along with top mounts i'm going to get the rest of my brake upgrade, discs, pads, carriers and braided lines.  And look to do everything in one go, it's doing my head in having buts laying around for it!

While i had the strut brace off i give a quick rub down and a couple of coats of paint from a rattle can, will get it painted properly if i can still use it when coilovers/new top mounts are fitted - as it's a bit of a rough job...

Put the standard strut back on this morning and give a wash, clay and coat of autoglym HD.

Hopefully some parts will start appearing on the car soon and some more interesting developments in the next few months ;)

I think it will be an AGU unit that goes into this.

With this hybrid ;)

Also picked up a Thatcham Repair manual from ebay and believe it or not the haynes is from when i owned my first felicia 10+ years ago :D

Not much progress, but things are beng considered/planned :)

Do I smell a ko3 turbo conversion coming on?

what's the plan clarkey?

  • Author

Hi Tom, i'm looking to have a 1.8T AGU conversion carried out over the winter.

It will have the Hybrid k03, as above. Will be looking at fuelling too, to try and get 250bhp+

All other bits mentioned above will be fitted too, brakes, suspension.

I reckon i'm going to need a LSD of some sort too...

How do you find the Felicia handles the power in your 1.8T?

Don't think my 1.3 has a Front anti roll bar, so will look at fitting one, will the mounting points be there already?

I was thinking about a universal strut brace to go across the back too :S

Things are progressing, albeit slower than i wanted. At least it's off the road now for me to play with

proper bling

I'm glad you've taken inspiration from within the pages of briskoda, you are just the sort of person that makes this site, fettling the car.. I've toyed with the idea of fitting 4 pot calipers on mine but I'm struggling to justify the cost, the v6 modeo calipers work pretty well on my 20v car on 280mm golf g60 discs..

so what plans are there on the engine side of things? personally I think you would regret putting a 1.8T engine in there, it's a hideously expensive proposition if somebody else is carrying it out, if you want to take mine out for a drive you are very welcome if our paths ever cross somewhen, the useability of the car is fairly limited with that powerplant fitted and I think you would quickly come to the same comclusion too, I'd rather see something more fresh and more practical, 125bhp 1.6 16v lupo/polo gti engine is where I would go with the possibility of turbocharging/supercharging at a later date

  • Author

Some great info in here to work with :)

I'm really struggling with the engine decision! I can't decide what i want from the car when its finished.

Coming around to a diy 16v conversion though

Do you have any plans for an LSD in your car Tom? Should make it more useable...

LSD is prohibitively expensive really, maybe if the gearbox blows up ill do it, it's more to do with a mismatch of power over substance, it will go up to tripple digit speeds on tap in any gear, it's just rediculous, it makes it a real handful to drive which kind of detracts from the fun of a sporty car.. I never though I'd ever say it but it's too powerful to make it practical, honestly I would say stick with a lighter lower power unit and red line it like you just stole it, rather than saying "ooh less fast, less fast, less fast" all the time

The focus top mounts on the front coilovers were a dead end they destroyed themselves pretty much instantly, the weight of the car pushed them over the spring cups

So i started looking at solid top mounts (compbrake) and was offered a 2nd hand set of TAS items (cheers Jim). Sleeve nuts ordered from Compbrake to go with them.

At the weekend i took out the front coilovers fitted the topmounts, bled the Wilwoods, started it up and moved it around a bit. All seems ok, apart from the twangs from the front coilovers when steering, but i'm going to let them settle, tighten everything, etc and see if that sorts it...

I really need to get a few miles on the car to bed in the brakes and adjust the height, but is currently SORN'd

This is what i have a the moment, bit high at the back

If anyone can measure Felicia standard height that would help, as i haven't a clue how much i've lowered it!

excellent stuff, the back should be lower than that even on a standard car.. quick question for you, how much clearance is there between the caliper and the inner edge of the wheel? i want to put wilwoods on mine now but using a 280mm disc

  • Author

I can't get a good photo of the clearance.

But i don't think the extra 24mm on the disc dia. will cause a problem.

If i have the hub off again i'll assemble and get a pic for you, otherwise is there an easier way i can quantify the clearance for you?

I'm not sure actually, becuase the 280mm g60 disc has a different offset height so there is more than one dimension at stake... A picture inside the wheel would be good though.

Are they G60 steels?

  • Author

Yes, commonly known as G60 steels, though i bought them new from VW last year.

I'll see if i can get a helpful pic...

If the disc offset is different, you could get around issues with wheel spacers? Or am i not understanding what you mean :D
