Decided to de trim door rub strips

Featured Replies

It is a kinda marmite approach on this, as even I was yes or no for a while.

Decided to bite the bullet and remove the door rub strips

Will possibly colour code the remaining Bumper trim to finish off but for now like it as it is.

tools for the job

- Tar / Panel sticker removal fluid

- Trim strip removal wheel

- Old Credit or similar to start off lifting trim

- lot's of rags

This wheel is a absolute life saver. It is rubber and you can connect it to a low RPM drill to create friction and heat which will make much lighter work on cleaning off residue sticky stuff left behind

First I used boiling water to heat up the trim. I used a old credit card to start off removal of trim

Then very slowly poured hot water down trim and pulled at same time.

First rub strip removed

You can see that it leaves a tram line of doubled sided tape behind

This was quite easy to remove trim. Did this to all 4 rub strips

Then it was time to use the trim strip removal wheel.

First I soaked a rag in the tar/panel cleaner fluid and wiped over the leftover residue. I cleaned off any dirt. The residue became a little tacky with the cleaner which is better for the trim remover wheel to adhere to it. With the wheel attached to a drill I started off slow and careful then began to get confident. The wheel doing a good job of grabbing the residue and pulling it off. Took approx 5 minutes per door, which without the wheel would of been a hell of a lot longer

first door cleaned up.

With light fading just finished the rest and then used some detailer and clay then some light rubbing compound and scratch remover to clean up the area where adhesive had been.

and results I quite like.

Looking good bud

I'm having this dilemma too atm, just not sure it I will like them removed with the yellow paint.

Silver looks well with them removed.

Looks good, but I would paint the bumper strips silver now.

I can't believe how well that's come up, looking great

Yep that is now on the cards. Will do the prep and then get them finished at a paint shop.

Cheers yep was nervous at first, but very happy with results.

My MK1 was like this too with no trims.

Wish i could do my MK2 but the trims sit in a much wider indent so would look completely naff :(

So....

Has anyone colour matched the rub strips to Black Magic? im thinking of this during the summer.. when it comes..

as a by the by, it looks fantastic in silver de stripped

You know, I prefer em with.

A lot of the later 07-09 taxi mk1's came de-rub stripped from the factory!

I also de-rubbed mine but had horrible bubbling paint below!

Tried the de-rub

Then some leon cupra ones (fell off)

So bought some new black ones to sell the car! Check the comical ride height

Jeez, that looks higher than standard lol

Probs just cause it had just been jacked up!

It looked way funny!

There's a carbon dipping place just set up near me and I was thinking of getting all of mine dipped. Obviously would have to buy all new ones first though but reckon on my corrida red would look pretty decent with that done. Anyone tried it before?

Not bad. :)

Was going to pull mine off and plastidip them, I thought they clipped on! Glad I didn't now, would have been a nightmare to reattach!

Is bubbling paint a common problem for people having done this, or a one off?

It just depends on your luck!

My old fabia vrs has bubbles and so did my octavia vrs! My octy was a 55plate so one of the newer ones so you can have either or! All 4 doors on mine were bubbled below

Putting me off doing it on my 12 plate Fabia now :(

Its to do with applying the trim too soon after paint!

It could be fine it could not

You can always try it and if its fluffed put new ones on

If you buy new strips do they come with the adhesive/tape/whatever it is?

Personally, I'd rather go for colour coding 'em, especially on a silver motor, but then the bumpers'd need doing too...

But then my car looks like crap, and I don't have the time to worry about what it looks like. :giggle:

Yeah i bought genuine ones from fleabay! Think they were £30 but i had to look for them! Dont come up often
