My laser alert has never been triggered either.

Snooper S3 Neo? I can get them for

Had a good look into all the speed camera / laser / radar devices last month. Read through forums, review sites etc. So many conflicting reviews ideas, opinions etc. As has been pointed out with new legislation the laser/radar devices will be illegal soon so no real point in anything other than GPS. Also there seems to be quite a lot of speculation as to whether laser detectors are even effective in most real life situations. Radar used much less these days too.

So, my thinking toward a dedicated TomTomGo with free upload of camera database - (navigation system to boot!) If you are paying up to

Blimey, thats cheap. I'll have to let my mate know he got ripped off! He took them as part of a deal for someone to pay off a debt to him. He's got 24 of them too!

As for the Furby being slow... Hmm yeah true. But then so are all the other cars on the road I go past

Thanks chaps. I must appologise for the Fabia reference, I did actually consider changing the Octy for one recently. And as for being bothered to stick to the speed limits, that's not the issue. it takes considerable effort on my part to achieve the speeds that I consider safe and being an advanced driver, I concentrate twice as hard as a mere mortal on the road environment, using the Information that I receive via my extended observations to adjust my position, select the appropriate gear then apply the correct acceleration thus applying the System of Car Control to my every day driving.

Oh, BTW I've won a Road Angel 2 off Ebay for

 - excellent follow-up post ;)

I don't have much trouble getting up to the legal speed limit. Only takes 3 gears... Then I use the others to actually drive in on the motorways, depending on conditions and my need to speed up/slow down :D

It's still cool to be able to jump up to 70mph in a very short time though, just to align the car nicely with an appropriate gap in the traffic flow, rather than having to work at it a lot more (or worse, stopping at the end of a sliproad which unfortunately still happens quite a lot to an alarming number of people).

Any reason you'd need a RA2 when you never speed ;)

I looked into this as well. I was 99% going to get a Road Angel 2.

Two things stopping me, the laser detector will probably only tell you that you have been speed checked and the fact that it has an inbuilt laser detector will mean it will soon be illegal.

While still unsure I borrowed a Navman ICN610. I was impressed with the GPS routing but also impressed with the Camera database which give's Gatso, Truvelo, Specs, mobile sites and even red light camera's if you want.

So I bought one, dowloaded the data base from pocket gps and in 3000 miles of driving I haven't passed a camera that isn't in the database.

Cheers

I think I may have been hasty in ordering the RA2, but it was really cheap. It's a factory reconditioned unit which comes with 6 months free subscription. Hopefully it will work. (ahem.) It was from an Ebay shop which sells a lot of reconditioned units on the site.

I can't really afford 4 to 5 hundred poonds on a new device so I'll let u know how this reconditioned effort works.

BTW safety camera vans seem to be the hardest speed control to protect against. I've been done 1ce (possibly 2ce) by them and still haven't found a legal way of getting around them, apart from (left eye twitches manically) sticking to the speed limit.

Got a 2nd hand road angel 1 of ebay for

*bump*

Through the post today...

On my way to Rockingham, driving through Northamptonshire, past plenty truvello and the odd average speed detecting wotsits, seems I was done by 2 mobile units.

I hate driving in Northamptonshire. I've never come across so many cameras and under-limited roads in my life. Quiet B road with no residential areas nearby that would be derestricted in most other parts of the country - zapped for doing 60 in a 50. Earlier on the same journey, zapped for doing 50 in a 40 zone. The 40 zone was a dual carriageway...

You know, if I'd been pulled over and had my bad driving explained to me, no doubt I would not have gotten done a second time. I guess from what is being said here there are no (legal) devices out there that would have saved my butt from these mobile piggy banks.

Money grabbing mofos. In order to pay for my fines I have to cut back on leisure activities. Much as it pains me I won't be visiting Rockingham for the rest of the year. Northamptonshire has benefited financially from me for this, I will now not be contributing to their local economy for the remainder of '05.

..I'm thinking about the TomTom Go500 (latest dedicated ver with blueTooth- for hands free). Good cheap sat nav. with Speed camera download. Anyone tried it esp. in regard to speed trap location. New ver just released this month. Maplin with money off offer is the cheapest I can find it anywhere (pre-order tho).
I ordered the TomTom Go 700 from Maplin at

how easy are road angel 2's to install?

i live in northampton and it drives me up the wall but whatever anyone says the road angel is unbeatable, on a few occasions i have been on the motorway and creaped above the limit and the blokes on the bridge have zapped me and it tells you straight away, what people dont realise is that they have to hold a steady speed for a number of seconds if it drops right down they cant proceed, thats where road angel saves you if your going too fast

how easy are road angel 2's to install?

Very.

You clip on a screen mount and plug into the ciggy lighter

I have hardwired mine to free up the stupidly placed power socket.

As previously mentioned - it's an official bit of kit now so the dealer will hard wire it if need. :)

Also, there's a howto on here somewhere if your dealer's too mean to do it FOC. :finger:

I used to own a Bel 550i but sold it as I got over confidant. That was stupid as I found out a few weeks ago:( So I purchased a new Road Angel 2. They remembered I bought my last detector from them and I got an excellent deal.

I find the detector excellent. It is very well built. I like the directional detection so it will only pick up a camera in your direction of travel. A great feature as the Bel would have many false alarms. The RA2 has had none so far. Upgrading od data base is also very easy.

To get the detector where I want it in my Furby I use the straight power lead but will get it hard wired soon. Anyone know how much an auto electric would charge?

So far I give this 10/10

Look at the howto and do it yourself - it's an easy fit!

I see this thread has been resurected, so I thought I'd let you know how the cheap RA2 is doing. Very well as it goes. I was a bit worried in the first couple of weeks as it took ages to locate sattelites when first plugged in, but that time has shortened since then.

I've managed to download all the necessary software and update the database on the device, and so far, it hasn't let me down once. I haven't passed any mobile units yet though.

The majot issue I have is with the bouncey window mount. It sometimes rattles the RA off it's mounting. Blu Tak should solve that though.

I want to get it hard wired now though. Any links to the how to? Or any good prices? I hear Halfrauds will do it for

Pretty easy mate.

Find a fuse in the fusebox that is a switched live and a suitable cct then using the lead supplied and a scotchlok connector connect to the outgoing side of the fuse.

Drop the kick panel down in the Octy and you will see some bolt on connections, cant remember the connections but one is switched posotive and another two constant posotive.

All halfords do is come of off one of these with a round crimp through an inline fuse to a cigar socket that is mounted behind the dash.

They then just plug in your Road Angel/ Sat-Nav behind the dash.
