YIKES! Steering rack leaking fluid, TPS quoted

Featured Replies

Hi all, just found my steering rack leaking, TPS say this is not a serviceable part and quoted me £450 for a new rack. I thought there maybe a seal that I could replace, its leaking where the steering rod screws in on the ns. Can this be repaired? any ideas where I could get a cheaper rack?

Cheers again folks

Eddie

EuroCarParts have reconned racks you can get for a lot less, trading in your broken one.

Cheers for that, have been doing a bit of digging and have found cheaper. Before I start pulling the car to bits, any tips on other parts I would be just as well fitting while in there, or any tips on parts that will just have to be changed, or just, any tips?

Cheers

I seen bottles of that on ebay, I have a fair leak though, did your mates have a bad leak before you put this leak stop in?

Thanks..

It was hard to tell!

The boot had a hole in it, it could have been leaking for years!

Stuck a new boot on it and used new fluid and stop leak, level hasnt dropped and no visible signs of oil!

It may work it may not, for a tenner its worth a bash! Beats a new rack

One thing about this leaking rack business, I've just been looking on my parts list for bits for a TRW rack (bellows clips), as I need to replace a steering rod, and I noticed that there was a "seal" listed and shown at both ends of the rack - but quantity was "1-off" which seems a bit strange!

You can buy seals and fit them, a fairly simple job, however the reason the rack leaks in the first place is that the chrome plated piston at each end is corroded and pitted, this then damages the seals again.

I got a rack for a 4 motion Golf for £225 and my old one returned to them, this is a 2.5 turn lock to lock so slightly different.

A company on Ebay in Birmingham offer a standard Golf rack for £90 service exchange. I mentioned them higher up this thread. ACS Tamworth.
