Legal, decent, honest and truthful...but WOW!

Featured Replies

Let me set the scene, an autobahn, north of Munich, yesterday morning about 11. Road was clear and flat and straight, weather sunny, surface dry. (Just so the mods understand..). No speed limit.

UK Superb II, combo, three months old, 170 DSG, in 'drive' gear. Alone in the car, pretty full tank and some kit in the back.

Took about three/four miles to get there, but I topped 140 on the speedo (where it stopped rising), and 231kph on the MFD, which I reckon is just over 143 MPH. Not sure which is more accurate but I am guessing MFD, which interestingly only refreshed about once every 15 secs at that speed. Or maybe I was (rightly) concentrating on the road. Still felt firm and responsive.

Good bit in excess of the 'theoretical and published' max. Things happen quick, so I didn't look at the faces of the three Beemers and a Merc drivers I went past (over a ten mile length). But imagine it was a picture. Then saw other traffic and lorries in distance and let it slide off.

I say this simply because so many friends and colleagues have yawned and gone 'boring...' since I told them what I bought in January.

NOT!

And back near Calais this evening, still averaging 42.5 mpg. Completely magic. Praise is not high enough. And having done it once, that's enough. Note: This is not a competition but simply an observation which may elucidate others who don't have the same opportunity.

140 on the clock would seem correct - A 170 DSG estate is rated at 135 (216) so i would guess you were closer to the early 130's rather than early 140's. - a speedo at 70 is usually 2-4 mph out.

To be fair tho, I'm not a one for "Top" speeds and have never had a car anywhere near it - Pushing the mechanics to the absolute limit, on a car that i rely on every day, unless necessary, isn't something i would want to do.

Al.

I doubt that many people either have the oppertunity or the nerve to max out their vehicle on the autobahn for more than a few minutes these days, When i had my Superb in Germany on a trip a few years ago I saw almost a similar figure and that was with four people with luggage on board. The car was stable as a rock,

seeing a garage regenerate a DPF is more of a worrying sight!!!

Good on yer. I bet it was eerily quiet as well?

I used to always max out my cars before selling them just to see what they could really do but those days are long gone.

Germany is great but you need to watch your rear view as well as the front. I've been flat out before over there (about 135ish) only to be overtaken by a Porsche that I hadn't seen and he went passed me about 20-30 mph faster.

I've driven around Munich as well as but in a Mercedes Vito. I surprised how quick they can go.

Had to travel between Irschenberg, Vatterstaten and Augsburg regularly on trips there.

The car was stable as a rock,

Mmmm, not in my view, over 110mph the steering becomes way too light and imprecise. Also, if you have to brake, rather than just let off, at over 120mph, and its not what I would call stable. It also takes a long while to get up to these speeds too. So wouldn't be my choice of autobahn cruiser.

Cheers

Steve
