73 MPG

Featured Replies

Decided to drive for economy on way back home from airfield last night.

Journey consisted of:

1 mile farm tracks and single track roads

6 miles of two way A road passing through two small towns

22 miles on rural and urban motorway

2 miles of town driving with five sets of traffic lights

Achieved a remarkable 73.0 mpg. And the journey only took a few minutes longer than normal!

Even if maxidot is overestimating a little, this is still amazing for a boxy 4 X 4.

Tank was almost full of diesel and nothing removed from car to lighten.

PS Got passed by two silverish Yetis in quick succession on motorway. Amazing to think that after I got mine in November 2009, I did not see another Yeti on the road for six months.

That's an EXCELLENT achievement there fine bone. (The MPG, not being passed by two other Yeti's :giggle:)

Now just post a couple of photos for us.

I hope you weren't hogging the middle lane .

( how many hours were you on the motorway to be passed by 2 Yetis?) :giggle:

Impressive!

Will try to post a picture the next time.

Might not be so lucky with the lights but think I can beat 73mpg.

What was your speed then to achieve these figures I can get 70 odd on the maxidot but that means driving at 40-50 mph

Best I've seen with relative slow driving on a busy motorway, to work (over 22 miles) which is in the main downhill, is a shade over 60mpg. But that's on the maxidot screen. Maybe if I put a sail on the roof (Bobdog might have a spare?) and the wind is favourable, I could reach 70+...

OK. Tried it again but this time I had less than half a tank and took all the back seats out.

Result; 72.5mpg!

Think I made the mistake of moving the car about 50 yards about 10 mins before I set off to take out the seats and this was included in the trip.

Apart from that, it was a lot earlier in the evening and traffic was busier. I got stopped at 4 traffic lights and two roundabouts instead of only once last time.

And it was harder to maintain 40-50mph on motorway with more traffic. So 73mpg is beatable but it will not be easy!

Is that English or Scottish miles? :giggle:

Fred

73, I'm happy if I can achieve 37 .

My Maxidot makes some astonishing claims, but in >16K miles I've yet to beat 53 mpg in a 2WD 110 TDi - Fuelly link below. The longterm average is about right though @ ~47 mpg.

I average about 44mpg so that sounds right for the lighter 2WD.

However, I think my trips show how much less diesel you can use if you go easy on the right foot.

Same in any car really.

Been in situations where there's been 10 miles of fuel left on the range and the nearest station is 30+ miles away. The you start driving like a saint and still have 10 miles left when you get there.
