Swapping my R32 for a Yeti - am I mad or what?

I'm not a great fan of diesel motors. I had a BMW 330d a few years back and although the torque was

there in spades I still didn't like the diesel smell and cold starting clatter. Fuel consumption is somewhat

irrelevant if you have an R32!

Had the demonstrator Yeti been petrol I would have had snapped it it on the spot. As it is I had to mull over

the diesel aspect. It certainly sounded a lot quieter than the BMW so maybe diesel technology has improved

in the Yeti.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I must admit i couldn't sell my R32 and just have the Yeti, even the 170.

Luckily I have the best of both but with the R puts a smile on your face every time the V6 burbles into life.

Please don't mention the lovely noises when you start the R32 up or put your foot down in any gear. I am now

getting upset. I now remember the smile on my face when I first took it for a test drive before buying it. Magic!

I was told in no uncertain terms that we did not need 2 cars so the R32 had to go. Had I ordered a new Yeti then

I stood a chance of keeping the R32 for a while longer but that would have meant taxing it, MOT and a service bill.

It would still have to go so then I would have the hassle of selling it privately.

The second generation VAG CR in the current yeti is a great motor and much better than the old PD I had in the Golf V 4motion or the first gen CR in the earliest Yeti's.

Just remember to use the black pump from now on and enjoy; ;)

Oh nice sounding spec by the way.

TP

I have found the CR engine is a lot quieter & has a smoother pull compared to the old PD lump specially with the addition of the DPF ( emissions have seen to that), also the CR doesnt seem to have the regeneration issues with the DPF that the PD had .

The PD would give a 'nice' shove in the back when the turbo kicked in with a slightly worse mpg compared to the CR. I personally prefer the PD kick to the current smooth acceleration, specially as you really dont notice the speed creeping up.

Dont forget that you will have torque with the Yeti, & not power & if you have been a very long time petrol driver the change in driving style may take a little getting used to.

Thank you for that. I am a bit worried about how the white will look in our rather small development

where almost every other car is black or silver. My god, what is that huge white thing arrived at Richard's house!

Huge?

Do they all drive original Minis? :D

It's going to be fun. I loved the DSG box on the test drive. Early days but it seems to be very flexible to fit your driving style.

My wife hates my gear changing in the R32. Don't mention the braking either. All my protests that that is the way you have

to drive an R32 don't cut any ice. I'm basically a crap driver and need a different car. So enter the DSG Yeti!

No, but white does stand out a tad.

All the more reason to get it! I've been trying to get my dad to get a yeti for 2 years now without success. The fact you have to wait so long to get one and the residuals are so good speaks volumes IMO.

It's actually a common colour on the roads these days, even if not in your development.

Personally I like to be a bit different anyway.

I am so bored of monochrome "premium" brand cars that all look like different size versions of the same basic vehicle.

Having said that though the Yeti has been so impressive my Wife had one, then I got one too, then my Mum and finally my cousin.

Will be interesting to see how you get on with it.

Colour choice was very difficult when I was thinking about a new Yeti. No offence to anyone here but I found a lot of

the Skoda colours either drab or yuk. Surprisingly, I thought black didn't look right. Got it down to silver, white or

cappuchino. Went to look at them all in the metal and decided white really looked the best.

Was very happy that the demonstrator just happened to be white.

Our day-to-day driving is very rural - short, cold and hilly - so there's no alternative to just cruising gently, leaving the DSG to do it's thing quietly  . About once a week, for the sake of the DPF of course, a different sort of route is chosen where the DSG can do it's other thing .

You'll love it!

You're wife will love it.. I used to have a Cupra with 350 bhp, my wife hated it, bought a yeti diesel se, I've already asked if I can trade it in for an l and k, but she's not having any of it......... I think it's a keeper....

I am getting very excited about the new Yeti. Roll on Tuesday. It's goodbye to an excellent motor but time for a change.

Thanks to everyone on this forum who has responded. This forum is hugely beneficial to new owners like myself.

I have a white diesel DSG elegance, which was remapped at 2000 miles approx. by Shark Performace. I had the larger 312mm brakes fitted and a flappy paddle steering wheel.

Check out the Yeti Project section for both my Yeti and BossFox's. ????

It now has over 37,000 miles. I even managed to average 46mpg today over 150 miles.

It is great fun.

Agreed, colour is totally down to personal preference. Certainly agree on the white or silver (not brown in any hue though, light or dark) as colours that best suit the Yeti and if I were to get another Yeti (depending on what the FL details reveal) then it will indeed be white or silver.

That's why our is white too - ok, we actually had to order ours, but still . My personal opinion is, that you made a right choice and I wish you (and your wife) a lot of enjoyfull and safe miles in your Yeti.

Best regards!

Many thanks. This time tomorrow.....

If you had this conversation on the R32 owners club forum they would be saying Don't do it ! ;)

I'm guessing that they would fight for the R32 for such price - please note, that I am not in tuch with the UK prices for such cars :)

You will not regret the swap and you will love your Yeti,it is superb.

Wish mine was candy white,Im stuck with brilliant silver....lol

BTW,white compliments the Yeti best in my opinion.

Enjoy!

Hi pipmurray!

My Yeti CR140 DSG is similar to Rockhoppers; remapped, bigger brakes and flappy paddle steering wheel (for manual gearchanges) and a most enjoyable drive it is too. My driving is generally spirited / brisk and the Yeti is a thoroughly enjoyable motor (I had a remapped and tweaked Octavia vRS TDI beforehand and in many ways the Yeti is better). Compared to your R32 a few more ponies is all that you might want for.

On the noise front the CR140 is really quite un-diesel like, particularly compared to my next door neighbour's '02 reg BMW 320d which sounds like its got a clutch of blacksmiths under the bonnet when it starts up.

White Yeti? Didn't you know that white is the new black?

Overall, I'm sure you will not be disappointed. Enjoy.

This is what I love to hear.

I hope the R32 goes to a good home as it has been a superb motor,

but after 4 years I fancied a change. Welcome to the Monster!

If you have acquired a 140 with 3k miles you have a car which is only beginning to loosen up. Mine was just about coming into it's own at 18k when I traded it in. If you plan on keeping it you could treat it to a sneaky extra oil and filter change. Quite unnecessary according to the accountants who now control service schedules but to be rid of any running in waste is, IMO, an investment in the long term health of any engine.

My new one might have been white but I fell for a gleaming black one I saw and although it is a pain to keep it clean after an initial polish with autoglym successive coats of collinite and Poorboys Black hole wax it is starting to get a really deep gloss shine which does it for me.

I looked at the L&K in the brochure and thought that looks fantastic. I see there's a couple on the SUK website both with

just a few miles on. Is the L&k the creme de la creme version?

Yes, sunroof and Columbus nav on top of the Elegance as standard.

Buying an Elegance and adding those actually costs more... Due to the cost of options.
