Swapping my R32 for a Yeti - am I mad or what?

Featured Replies

Had my black R32 for 4 years now and it has been a fantastic car. Most reliable of

all the cars I've owned which have included BMWs and Porsches.

Fancied a change and decided to look at SUVs/Crossovers. Couldn't get excited by

any of the usual suspects but saw a Yeti Urban at a Motor Show at the local Mall last

year and it appealed in a funny sort of way.

Was tempted to order a petrol version with DSG but I don't like waiting for things as I'm

a bit of an impulse buyer.

A demonstrator came up at my local dealer with most of the spec I wanted, except it was

diesel. White with 3000 miles, 140bhp Elegance version with DSG, sunroof and heated windscreen. It

looked good in white and drove beautifully. Salesman convinced me that the 2 litre diesel is probably

the better choice with DSG than the 1.2 petrol version. We shall soon see.

Deal done! Chopped in the beloved R32 and I pick the Yeti up on Tuesday. And now for something

completely different!

  • Yes, the deal is done. On my drive now and I'm in the pub with a well 'earned' pint! Smooth transaction and a lovely salesman, but why do they put so little fuel in the car. Had to stop on the way h

  • All relative of course. Coming from a V8 Supercharged Range Rover of course a 170 or 140 Yeti will be slow. Coming from a Nissan GT-R everything will be slow... But for real daily roads and viz a v

  • It's how the car goes and how the power is delivered, as you know as a 170 owner. These cars develop a slug of torque in the mid range which makes them feel quick. I know you have a thing for the Fo

Completely different - R32 petrol -> 140 Diesel = Understatement :)

You can only answer that question seriously after you have had the Yeti a couple of month.

At least I won't have all the local boy racers with back-to-front baseball caps

in souped-up Corsas trying to take me on anymore!

How much did they give you in PX for the R32?

Yes! Completely potty :)

Bear in mind the R32 was coming up to six years old with a very expensive VED,

an MOT and a major service coming up in the next couple of months.

If you assume I paid the dealer's asking price for the demonstrator then I got

£9K for he R32 which I don't think is too bad considering I only paid £15k for

it 4 years ago. His original offer was £7750.

I often hire SUV style vehicles whilst on holiday......after a week the novelty wears off and I realise how much better and more suitable a standard car is, to me at least

I swapped a Civic type R for my Yeti, everyone thought I was mad even the service manager at a Skoda dealer, but after 2 years with the Yeti I still love it more than I ever did my Honda.

I forgot to mention that my proverbial bad back is not getting any better as I

get older. This is why the Z4 had to go and the R32 is not the softest of

rides!

Ahh, didnt know if it was a MK4 or 5. If it was a 4 I wanted to know the dealership lol.

I expect one or two people who know about performance enhanced Yeti's will be along in a moment-there are several really quick ones run by members here.I don't suppose you have been too shocked to find people who have chosen not to have (and may have little experience of Yetis) are unenthusiastic about your choice. I suspect some people enjoy posting in sections mainly populated by those who like a particular car to point out thier perception of a car they don't like.

I came to my first Yeti from a Seat Leon Fr-as you will know a 200 bhp car built on a Mkv chassis. It too had a Dsg box.

You will not find the Yeti as good at driving as if your trousers are on fire but you will already have discovered the benefits of more or less flat cornering and good crisp pointable handling coupled with a much improved view forward high point to point averages are very easy.

I did the same holiday journey from Central Southern England to close to Portalegre in Portugal (French ferry out and drive down and back via Spanish port home) two years running.

The Yeti covered the ground in more or less the same time (two less stops to pay fines in france) but the difference was in how I felt. Much fresher, no back pain and stopping fit for a gentle evening out rather than stopping because I had too. The Seat broke me at the end of 560 miles in a day.

I've never driven an Octy although I've been in many (most local taxis are Octavias) and they are low to get in and out of and have no great comfort.

Good choice of car!

You wont regret it.....Shark can remap the 140 up to 175 bhp with ease if need be ...its a nice car to drive, own and live with

You'll still beat the pants off 'em!!! :D

The 140bhp Elegance is surprisingly quick. ;)

Makes sense to me.

R32 is nice, but Yeti is a real "jack of all trades" which may be slower (but not much in the real world of speed limits) but will do so much more.

Out of all the SUV and performance cars I've had it's the best all round usable package.

Thanks for all your encouraging comments. I feel really good now about my decision

and am looking forward to Yeti ownership.

Now to get my wife to read this thread. She's one of the many who are less than

enthusiastic about this idea!

Well. I did a similar thing last year with our (then 3rd) Focus RS. I chopped it in for a nearly new Ford Kuga AWD. It lasted 2 months before I was totally sick of it. So I chopped THAT in for a nearly new Focus ST (the new model) before finally conceding defeat and getting our current RS (our 4th)

In my situation, I kept convincing myself that my fast ford itch was scratched - but I was kidding myself thinking I would be happy in something like the Kuga in the first place.

But you sound like you are ready for the change. Good luck and let us know how it goes. With pics!

My Yeti has done track days, plenty of commuting, family transport and pulled a loaded car transporter trailer.

It will surprise hot hatches too.

Not forgetting a bit of light offloading...

Not many performance cars could do that! :D

You're wife will love it.. I used to have a Cupra with 350 bhp, my wife hated it, bought a yeti diesel se, I've already asked if I can trade it in for an l and k, but she's not having any of it......... I think it's a keeper....

Having tried a Kuga I can understand why the novelty would wear off quite quickly.

There are a couple of good fords. That isn't one IMO.

Or maybe you just aren't a crossover person. :)

I've spotted a couple of l and k's on the used SUK site that are as new or very low mileage. Go for it!

When the time came to change my wife's Yeti it could only go if it was replaced with the same car/colour/engine/gearbox as the old one, just a better spec.

So that's what happened. :)

Err... offRoading!

In all fairness, you're not downgrading in terms of quality/refinement. From what i've read and experienced the Yeti has proven to be a very good car. I'm only 22 and even i'd buy one if it wasnt for doing such a big commute

I must admit i couldn't sell my R32 and just have the Yeti, even the 170.

Luckily I have the best of both but with the R puts a smile on your face every time the V6 burbles into life.
