Putting a GPS mouse INTO the rear spoiler?

Featured Replies

I'm trying to integrate my GPS mouse for my car PC into somewhere hidden on the OUTSIDE of the car, as its getting a poor signal from anywhere inside.

I was wondering if there is space inside the rear spoiler on my VRS to put it, I can then use the brake light cable run to run the cables back inside the car.

I cant think for a second that it would be hollow but I dont want to go ripping it off to have a look if someone already knows? Is it just bolted on?

Short of this i'll have to hide it in the wing mirror or worst case inside the bumper (which means less signal), failing that, make up something like what the BMW's have for the external mobile aerial on the roof and spray that up the right colour!

Thanks

why not buy the Skoda GPS aerial that replaces the normal beesting???? (not sure how it would connect and yes you still get radio).

You sure? Mine works fine (7/7 sometimes, even) sitting where the dash meets the bottom of the windscreen, just under the plastic clip thingy... I take it the system works fine OUTSIDE the car? You might just have a dodgy sensor unit...

mine was always full sat on passenger side where dash meets window and falls in love

Mine works and mines in the glovebox :D

Apart from round abouts

It DIDNT work inside the car at all, but recently, when its been nice weather, it worked INSIDE the glove box WHEN CLOSED!!!

I've just driven to the local cinema with it on the glove box flap and had 5 sats all the way! but two weeks ago nothing short of putting it outside the car would help. So I wanna permanently wire it outside.

Replacing the Beesting aerial with Skodas own one is an interesting idea but i dunno how that would work, i've got a Royaltek Saphire USB GPS mouse and the satellite receiver is a 1" square dish inside the unit itself, not quite sure how an "aerial" would pick up satellite signals?

The Skoda GPS antenna/aerial looks like the std aerial but it has a button shaped bulge at the front. This houses the GPS antenna.

You cansee what I mean in this pic of the Superb with the aerial.

Mine works fine and it sits on centre of dash where window screen meets it.

To wire roof aerial in you'll have to take headlining out... bit drastic!!

You don't have to take the headlining out to get at the aerial, but you do have to remove the trim around the tailgate aperture. This gives access between the headlining and the roof far enough forward to be able to get at the underside of the aerial. The wiring from the aerial runs to the C pillar at the back of the car, down by the rear speaker and along the trim beside the rear seat (it does on mine, anyway).

Oh right, my mistake....

In answer to your question.... i dont think spoiler is hollow.

ahhh, I see, there is a bit for it, now i'm wondering if I could take out the skoda receiver and put my own one in its place inside the mount! hehe

Anyone got a part number or any idea on price?

Both my GPS receivers work flawlessly squished between the dash and the windscreen in each corner.

running from what tho? carpc, laptop, using passive or active usb extension, powered or passive hubs?

i've got a Royaltek Saphire USB GPS mouse

That's the problem, afraid to say from my experience this Royaltek unit is not actually that good at resolving GPS signals! Possibly a weak RF front end.

I agree - sounds like a problem with the GPS itself. I've used 3 in Fabias - a Magellan 320 handheld (in a mount), the TomTom Bluetooth and the Pioneer Avic. All have been able to 'see' through the windscreen from a position on or above the dash with no problems at all.

If the unit isn't getting lock on any satellites at all, try taking it out of the car and leaving it running to let it lock on (may take up to an hour) so it knows where it is and has current almanacs; then try again from inside the car. My old Magellan needs a long time to get started if it has been switched off for a couple of months. If yours has never worked it could be in the same state.
