newbe - which hybrid to go for

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just bought a 05 vrs and am already making some plans what I want to do to it.

I wanna aim for 220 bhp and 350-375 lbft torque as headline figures.

From what I can gather by reading on here there are a couple of options to get those numbers:

get a pd150 turbo and sent it off to either CR turbos or turbo techniques? cost of the unit plus the work say £900?

or one of the GTB kits from darkside developments - but id be looking closer to £2000 in vat.

Appreciate Ill need to sort clutch etc and FMIC but just trying to fig out the best turbo to get.

It would be an everyday ca so I dont think I would go for any further power upgrades in the future after this.

Would the pd150 hybrid be reliable running those boost levels?

Cheers

Chris

Gtb is better 'overall' that is all.

If you can afford go for that.

Is the GTB just plug and play or does it need a custom mani?

oops double post.

Essentially, you buy the Darkside "budget" kit. It's not a simple turbo only replacement.

what are the limits of the hybrids

Cheers thats what I was wondering.

I've just been to darkside today to ask about the budget kits, the GTB1756vk kit is everything to bolt on, fitting and mapping including for £1600 with a dyno proven 230hp and around 350FtLb's, which to me is an absolute bargain

£1600 plus the VAT...but I still think it makes £900 for a hybrid plus fitting plus mapping look a bit silly. it was fun, but I wouldn't even consider a hybrid any more myself

Ahh forgot about the VAT, but even still that is a great price and he said its a much better turbo than a hybrid setup.

Then you'd need an uprated clutch on top, which is another few hundred to a grand depending on what you want/need.

might aswell buy a new car to be honest.

:D until you realise they sold you half the parts needed for the power, clutch, intercooler?

Lol at these post i have over 200bhp and have all the supporting mods on me car for less then darksides turbo kit

No doubt if you're going for big power the darkside kit is good but for 220-230bhp a hybrid is perfectly comfortable and good value at that power.

Do the hybrids actually make 220-230bho, they seem to be very hit and miss the hybrid PD150s, seen so many dyno graphs where they've barely made 205bhp?

my thoughts exactly dan

Amazed no ones mentioned it yet, normally the first thing in a thread like this.. But sort the brakes if they haven't already been upgraded.

I spoke to a lad who used to be a member on here yesterday, he had a hybrid pd150 on his and said he was disappointed with it.

He said I should go for the Darkside kit at least, Darkside have said it would be £1500 + VAT as I already have a down pipe :)

I'm in a major dilemma as I've already had a good price from AP Automotive for a hybrid!

when I spoke to darkside yesterday he said hybrids are very hit and miss, it just depends on what parts have been used to build them, I'd rather pay that bit extra and go with something that has proven power and will be reliable tbh.

I had mine maxxed at 1.9bar and it only acheived 200bhp

My thoughts too.

Mine has been mapped to around 170+bhp for about 18months and I'm bored and want more power.

The obvious choice would be the darkside budget gtb kit, but thats £1600+ vat for an extra 50bhp. My stage 1 map cost £250 for an extra 50bhp.

So for the next stage up in power just doesn't seem financialy viable, also the current map is kind on the clutch and IC.

I've got to admit, I won't be happy if mine doesn't make at least 220 once I've got the FMIC and clutch sorted. I specifically stated that I wanted a turbo capable of running that power reliably when I was scouting for a new unit.

However, I trust Ant at AP. He says the new PD150 hybrid direct from Garrett will be good enough for that.
