Fabia VRS - Hot Hatch or simply Warm?

Featured Replies

I think there is a real problem here. People simply arn't comparing like with like. The vrs fab has entirley different attributes to 99% of hot hatches and thats what makes it special. Its certainly a hot hatch, not exactly remarkable from a standing start but boy does it go like stink when you accellerate hard >30. Its a bit unfair to compare it to cars that are significantly more expensive although if you worked out a hot hatch perfomance ratio for performance vs

It's a warm hatch, keeps up with 24 year old Golf Gti that was a hot hatch 24 years ago. :)

"warm" - definitely. You cannot take what is a fairly plain appearing (no offence) hatch and call it hot. It needs to be a little lower, handle better, a bit quicker, and preferably not be a diesel - to be a "hot hatch". I see it more of a warm hatch which is capable of being a little surprising in some conditions.

Sure you can make them quite nice, but I don't think that's what is being got at here. :)

i agree with jason on this one, its definatley a warm hatch.

whats wrong with warm anyway, its better than cold plus i get loads more mpg than the hot hatches (civic type r, cooper s, clio 182 etc etc)

i dont think you can compare the vrs with any other car on the road because there isnt really another alternative besides its sisters (seat ibiza FR(ride too hard) and polo gt (too expensive)).

dont get me wrong i love my furby- its a cracking car and with a few mods is up their with the likes of these civics and clios, with regards to performance.

Why compare the Furby vRS with other makers petrol hot hatches? when clearly it's not in the same league!

Would it not be a better to compare it with other diesel hot hatches?

IMHO as it comes out of the box - it's a warm hatch.

I have to agree with WW - depending on how much you mod it you can get it pretty hot.

The slippery slope is what makes the difference.

I don't see why the fabia vRS isn't a hot hatch from stock?

130bhp is not unrespectable, it is relativly cheep to buy and run - I thought that was the definition of a hot hatch. Yes it is a bit lardy, but it can't be compared to the 205gti etc from a saftey perspective.

Yes it is hotter when remmaped etc, but I think if you took the fabia back however meany years to the official hot hatch territory, they woud be blown away by it.

A friend of mine recently chnaged his Fabia vRS for a Ibiza FR 1.8T as he felt that the vRS was a bit tepid.

Personally everytime i drove his car i thought it was excellent but i still prefer the way a petrol turbo engined car drives any day.

Warm hatch which is good as it is at the top of the warm hatch league!

hot hatch it would be low table.

It also gives us all an excuse if you get beat at the lights by a corsa :D

Warm, but definetely warm enough for me :D

personally it is nothing majorly fast but around the grid system in mk it is definately one of the cars to have and can outpace all the vtrs zetec s and cars from that league but definately not a hot hatch

its a jack of all trades but a master of none is a comment i heard on here which sums it up perfectly

my 2pence worth:

Warm hatch as stock (but top end of the warm hatch lists)

with a few mods it is botom end of hot hatch

still i love it for what it is and who cares if the clio etc are faster we just over take them every time they stop for fuel lol

It's a very competent, economical, warm hatch.

Problems:

too nose heavy with that oil burning stove in the front, affects handling in an irretrievable way.

no steering feel at all

not real-world signifiacantly faster than any other car with a VAG diesel turbo engine, so, er, thats about every other car out there on the road.....

other than that it is an excellent daily commute hack that gives a bit of fun on the twisty sections. Very pleased with mine.

Is the fiesta ST a hot hatch or a warm hatch?

I am sorry. Thread starter was a bit of a non-starter for 10, IMO (although granted its a good discussion starter for what might be an otherwise dull and bleak Saturday).

Otherwise while we are at it:

BMW: German Ford Sierra ?

Mercedes: Posh Taxis but no more remarkable than a big stinking Rover 820?

etc

VW Golf: A Skoda Fabia for those with too much money

...but I think we are all more intelligent than that and have their own judgement on why to pick a car without bringing in baggage like this.

I think the VRS has introduced this way of thinking about the model, which is a pity. When I first got a Skoda, I just thought damn the build is good and didn't really have any performance match concerns because I started on the 1.4 model (which is ok but just a run of the mill hatch performance wise)

Now it seems that its a frequent issue to have to justify how good the car is. Why bother, it just is !!

I just think the 11k price band, cheap insurance, and out of this world fuel economy, and above average performance to most standard cars on the road are more than enough for me to smile about.

I don't feel this "line up while we compare sizes" thing is really appropriate to the Brand. Discuss ?

At the risk of invoking cries of 'stone him!', I don't really get the hot hatch thing. The price puts them into another car type up, the performance puts them into a higher insurance category for youngsters who are likely buyers, for the same money you can get a pretty serious car second hand without the initial depreciation, they carry a lot of excess weight with regular car interior gubbins, they look basically the same as Aunty Mable's shopping hatchback, etc.

To me they're neither fish nor foul, so what is the attraction?

 Surely it depends how far you rotate clockwise the dial on the air con  my furb is hot in the winter and cold in the summer hth

Hot enough for me for the m.p.g i am getting !!!!!!!

I am in agreement with Blade404, Hot hatches are generally defined by their 0-60 time, being petrol and track handling.

The Furby vRS is a different animal, it has a diesel engine for a start, it doesnt have the stiff suspension of what is regarded as a hot hatch, it is not particularly quick off the mark from standstill.

BUT on the move in day to day driving, it is quick to overtake, it doesnt have the "harsh " ride of the hot hatches.

0-60 = Warm hatch

Track = Warm hatch

30-70 = Hot hatch

50-70 = Hot hatch

Just my 2p :)

Ok if you need an analogy put to it to really understand the VRS, then here it goes.

The VRS is a bit like the girl next door, or down-to-earth girlfriend.

Quite pleasing to know, easy on your wallet most of the time if you are sensible, but ever possible to thrill you when you least expect it.

If you want lots of additional plastics to boot (a la Pam Andreson) and other headaches that can go with it (including extra servicing costs and initial layout) a la "WAGS", then some more expensive vehicle is perhaps your vehicle of choice sir.

If you need it explaining again, then sir you are a moron.

Say no more :o)

A clio 182 is also 15k so you'd expect it to be faster and the furby doesn't have to be the hottest hatch , just fast enough to meet expectations.

Also most manufacturers have a choice of warm and hot models and like most things skoda the furby sits somewhere in the middle.

Hear, hear.

Im still wondering about the vrs in its position against the fiesta ST

Both are in the same class

The vrs has the edge on the ST performance wise

So is fords baby hot hatch resigned to the ranks of skodas vrs warm hatch?

Which car makers have made better cars in the same class as the fabia?

The clio 197

polo gti

and the up coming vxr

im sure they are more cars better than the poor effort from skoda

Bit harsh, calling the poster a moron isn't it? All he did was start a debate. However, I agree with your summation.

Sorry, I was deffo not calling the actual thread poster a moron far from it.

It was more a future prose, and I wasn't aiming it directly at the thread poster either more a generalised examination.

A case of if having explained this analagy it IF you STILL don't get it you need some help IFSWIM !
