Lanes on a roundabout - which to use?

Understand hatchy - there are no markings on the road nor signage suggesting which lanes to use.

Playing devils advocate here...

I too experience this exact same situation on a very similar roundabout.

The queue onto the roundabout at peak times can be horrendous.

As a result a lot of 'regulars' use the left hand approach lane to turn right.

At first it used to really annoy me as I felt they were pushing in.

There used to be lots of road rage incidents where cars in the right hand lane (2) on the roundabout would exit a point 3, effectively / deliberately cutting up the 'cheaters'.

The reality of the situation is the time taken to queue onto the roundabout is now substantially reduced as more traffic is able to enter and exit the roundabout as both lanes are being used to capacity.

It may be wrong but the 'cheaters' improve the flow of traffic!

Hope you guys dont come to mainland europe..... :giggle:

This is how it was explained to me (a long time ago):

You can see a roundabout as a large crossing with multiple lanes. Where you have to choose lanes before entering/leaving.

And on the roundabouts, you only indicate when leaving. Not when entering.

I was told 1 > 4 on a driving course but ordinarily I would 1>3. However i've noticed a lot of roundabouts being marked up for dual carriageways that would allow 1>4 and 2>3. Its what is currently in use jct14 of the M6 however few seem to be able to read the markings and drift around like smoke

You could also use position one to go straight ahead as it is also a dual carriage way. If people are using position 2 to turn right then they are in risk of a major accident.

1 > 3/4

2 is straight on or left only in my eyes...

Its just drivers being impatient tits... and it used to rile me that much in a similar situation that i used to be a tit back. (anyone who knows this junction will understand)

In central manc there is a roundabout under the mancunian way that joins it and princess parkway.

If you come off the mancunian way, there are two lanes - the left lane is signed to go left only, with the right to go straight on or right onto princess parkway (which gets the bulk of the traffic)

A large proportion of the traffic wants to get from the manky way onto princess parkway - so a queue develops in the right hand lane. as you can imagine, enterprising individuals decide to go in the left hand lane to try and gun it and cut across to get round the roundabout..

My journey was going straight on, so it was people like me who undoubtedly get cut-up.. so when i got the MX5, cheap car which i wasnt too fussed about, if i saw anyone lining up to "have a go" as i was getting to the roundabout, id set off at the same time and purposely block them.. and if i was in a real bad mood id be on the horn too.. normally i had a success rate of blocking them one a week on forcing them to go straight on instead of making it round.

childish - yes, but at the end of the day, if they hit me, with the amount of road markings and signs. they would have a difficult job proving it wasn't their fault.

I vote for 1-4 :)
