Front end problems

Featured Replies

Hi all,

There's been a clunk every time I turn the wheel for a few days now, and a rattle whenever I go over a small pot hole in the road as well. Took it to National Tyres today (only place open on a Sunday, apart from Halfrauds) and they advised that the offside coil spring has snapped, I need new drop links and the shock absorbers have seen better days! They had the pleasure of quoting £500+ for the work, and said not to drive as now I know there's a problem I'm liable should something happen

So I'm left with a few choices... Do i:

  • Get a garage to quote for parts and labour and get it sorted (£500+, more if I go to my friendly VAG specialist)
  • Buy the parts myself to get a garage to fit (£130 parts from ECP + labour) or fit them myself (probably a bad idea!)
  • Upgrade the suspension - I was tempted by coilovers all around but as the rest of my car is standard and I use it for commuting only not sure if it's worth it.

Either way I'm forking out another few hundred £ on her, again.

At least the engine runs fine, just everything else around it I will have replaced! :@

Appreciate your thoughts on this as I'm not sure what to do really.

Where are you located?

I'm in sunny Hull!

its amazing how a light penetrating oil can help persuade the customer how their perfectly good shock absorbers are in desperate need of replace ment

You driving a petrol or diesel? On phone so cant see.

If i recall, you bought some alloys from me a while back?

I'm driving a diesel mate, & yeah I bought some alloys from you. Still going strong they are!

Holmsie - I am tempted to leave the shocks alone, but I did get an advisory on one last mot!

Well I took her to another garage today who said there's nothing wrong with the shocks! Seems like National were just after money! Even if the shocks needed replacing, the quote I got for genuine parts was less the local VW tuning garage Ricci Concept then National, and they were fitted including VAT. Ricci Concept wanted £418, National £500+!
