New car Golf vs Leon VS Hyundai i30 advice.

Featured Replies

We are getting a new car in September and basically we have whittled it down to three cars that are suitable for carrying a wheelchair and economical, they are on Motability so the cost doesn't matter. The cars are as follows :-

Hyundai i30 1.6 td,

Seat Leon 1.6 TDI SE Tech Pack

VW Golf 1.6SE TDI

Out of the three which one would you go for and if it was the Leon/Golf would you pay a bit extra for  DSG rather than manual as I have heard people speak very highly of  DSG?

Would a Yeti not fit the bill? If not and as you say cost doesn't matter, Golf every time (just my opinion)

I have a Leon SE (not diesel though) and rate it highly, quality is good and it is well equipped and no doubt better equipped than the Golf I'm not convicted about the looks of the Mk7 Golf either, the rear seems odd to me.

SEAT leon would be my choice, in my opinion it is better than the golf 7

Take each one for a long test drive and see which is best for you.

Being a VW fan above all else i'd opt for the Golf however a lot of positive noise is being made about the latest generation Leon (most likely better spec than the Golf too). Have a look at the pair and see what you think.

My father in law has an i30 and it is pretty good - he can get his golf clubs in boot fine. The one thing I did notice was it isn't very well sound proofed even compared to our mkI Leon. His is a 1.4 petrol and the engine sounds quite loud in the cabin.

I have driven both, whilst the Leon is good the Golf is better, its quieter and feels better put together with better materials. As mentioned, its more expensive, if price is not a factor, the Golf.

I had a Hyundai i30 as a hire car and there 10/10 mate, very good on diesel, quiet, smooth, great car overall, I had the 1.6 turbo diesel think it was blue active one, there bit of a different style had cruise control + loads of extras as standard. Quite nippy aswel for what they are, obviously I'd rather have a Leon or a golf to be fair, but Hyundai is a very good choice

I've just passed a Golf Mk VII on the A338 with a fire coming from it's engine. Disregard my original post :D

We have a Cee'd (to the i30 like the Leon to the Golf) and I can agree its not particularly well sound proofed. Though it is spectacularly loaded with kit and I really like driving it.

I have now ruled out Hyundai, so it is now down to the Leon or Golf. I got talking to one of the neighbours yesterday and he said the Leon is a young persons car not a pensioner like you.

It looks like it has to be a Golf.

Leon is nicer in non sport trim than the golf + cheaper

If you aren't picking up the tab then unless you don't like the styling its a no brainer. The Golf is a nicer place to be and offers a nicer ride. The Leon however does offer better vfm arguably.

We had a test drive in the Golf every thing OK but wasn't to keen on the press button hand brake.

Would have said Golf , but after reading the July edition of Which & the test lab of depreciation values of Citigo v Up  & the Yeti v Audi Q3, & the Skoda coming out having least depreciation .

This was a real surprise given popular belief that the VW holds its value because its greater price & perceived build quality.

So would go with Leon.

We ordered the Leon SE 1.6tdi this morning  with the free tech pack which included LED lights, Sat Nav and DAB radio. It was very close with the Hyundai but the free tech pack won the day. As for the Golf, we didn't like not having a mechanical handbrake.

As I was reading the post I was just about to say go with the Leon as they are chucking in the Tech Pack for free - but you beat me to it!

Good choice.

Mistake should have had the golf IMO , the handbrake is a Doddle no need to push any button to take off just accelerate, and on a hill just push and drive off simples

So the Leon is better specced with the Tech Pack?

That makes the choice easy if you are not paying the bill, I'd have gone for the Leon out of your choices too.

The Golf is better if the spec is the same, otherwise you have decide what's important.  Badge or toys. :)

So in fact the Hyundai would have even better? Simply because its got more toys and cheaper :)

No, personally I'd prefer the VAG product.

So it would be between the Golf or the Leon.

Not too clued up on Hyundai, but do have one of their reps coming to see me next week. :D

So that'll be a Hyundai on Richards fleet lol :o

Leon is cheaper and looks better!

The mk7 golf is nothing special! Just looks like a twisted and squashed mk5/6!

I think they've ran out of ideas for the golf! Last 3 have been unbelievably similar

I have driven all of these as a hire cars from time to time and if I were spending my money that's the one I would go for. Way more kit for your cash, a little bit more power, bigger boot., long warranty. mpg will be slightly poorer that the VAG cars.

I looked at all 3 of these as my next lease car and lease costs were cheapest for the VW (presume this as to do with residuals).  In the end I went for a Civic where the lease costs were a good bit lower that all of the other options -  ( my local Honda dealer reckons that the Honda are offering these big lease companies unlimited warranties, hence low maintenance costs)
