first impressions of the pd engine are not great.

Featured Replies

I've had 5 cars fitted with the 1.9 PD engine, 100 & 130ps form and travelled up to 145k on one of them in my previous Fabia vRS. I wouldn't have anything else. One of the best and most reliable lumps you'll come across.

care to share a little more info on this? are u implying that these supper reliable engines have problems with heads lol

all i know is its a blt engine and the head has gemany stamped on it, a passat we have in has poland on it obv where they are made, but what do u mean about what revision it is how do you check this and what relevance does it have?

The letter at the end of the part number on the cylinder head will be either A, B or C indicating the revision.

Rev A heads go porous or crack. Rev B heads may go porous or crack, but tend to do so quite early on. Rev C heads are fine.

I have a Rev B with 170k on it with no issues.

If you have a rev A budget on a new head.

OR IS THAT A CASTING NUMBER NOT A PART NUMBER?

As far as I know the porous head issue only affects the 2.0 16v PD engines, Not the 1.9 PD.

On the 2.0 PD VAG updated the heads to try and fix the issue. By Rev C the problem was fixed. Most cars built from 2006 onwards have Rev C heads. But this is not applicable in this case......all MK1 fabias use 1.9 (or 1.4) PD engines.

This ^ the porous head issue is. 2.0tdi thing. A sh***e engine in many many ways.

The 1.9 doesn't suffer with it, don't worry.

And yes! Can't beat a B series :)

Never heard of that before!

You sure your not getting confused with the 2.0l pd?

They have porous head issues!

The 1.9pd can suffer 'head lift'

Couldn't disagree more. .

As long as you have a 'C' head, they are as reliable as the 1.9's.......but faster and more refined.

WELL IF THE HEADS DONT TEND TO HAVE AN ISSUE THEN IT MUST BE HEAD GASKET AS U RUN IT FOR AS LITTLE AS A MIN AND TAKE THE CAP OFF AND IT WILL PUSH WATER THROUGH THE OVERFLOW TUBE, AND UNDER THE CAR I CAN SEE WHERE IT HAS BEEN OVER HEATING WITH ALL THE COOLANT STAINS

IM GUESSING THE ROCKERS ON THIS ENGINE ARE ADJUSTABLE AS ITS QUITE TAPPY?

CAN EGR DELETE BE FITTED TO ALL THE ENGINES? EVEN THE BLT? AS THE TOP HOUSE THAT CLIPS IN POPS OUT AT THE BOTTOM AND WANT TO FIX IT WITH PROOPER FITTED HOUSES AND JUBILEE CLIPS

I've had two or 3 friends with a 2.0 tdi and the oil pump tensioner has failed. I don't think it's a rarity either.

IV WORKED ON 3 2.0 TDI ENGINES WITH OIL PUMP PROBLEMS ONE WAS CHAIN ON WAS THE DRIVE SHAFT THAT SPUN IN THE PUMP NOT DRIVING IT, THERES A GEAR CONVERSION KIT FOR THEM

The oil pump issue only really affects the BSS and BWW engines fitted to the Superb, Passat and A4. Even then only the early ones were really prone to it.

On the 2.0 BKD, ASZ and BMN engines (the vast majority of 2.0 PD engines) the oil pump drive is the same as on the 1.9 PD. So each are as reliable as the other.

I am really confused, the OP said

just got myself a vrs

so how can it be a 1.9 and not a 2.0 16v or have I missed something?

WHAT'S WITH ALL THE CAPITALS :S

I have been servicing fabia's since the 1st one was sold in the UK, ex Skoda dealer turned specialist.

in all that time I have done 1( ONE!!) headgasket on a 1.9 PD engine for a failure . lots of waterpumps tho

nothing is perfect tho and you may have a headgasket fault or it could be the result of a failed waterpump that was ignored at a guess.

they will happily drive many miles with a failed waterpump without showing any symptoms apart from a cold heater but as the coolant is not circulating then it overheats cyl 2+3 and cooks the gasket without appearing to get too hot.

after working on VAG stuff since they took over Skoda I have been impressed with how much abuse most items will take when compared to a similar age vauxhall or ford etc, not had much to do with SAAB's tho apart from the odd 900 years back.

get it stripped down and check that the head is still true and the water pump is good.
