1.8 TSI engine failure

Featured Replies

something tells me it's better to get extended warranty from skoda and don't keep a car much longer once expires...

Indeed, if you want long life I hear that Toyotas are a much better bet.

Just had news from garage of exact same issue with my Skoda Superb 1.8tsi. Under 50K mileage and just over 4 years and the timing belt failed/stretched and has caused valves etc to collide. Bill for new engine around the £6.5K mark I am told by garage. Am awaiting response from Skoda Like you I feel I should not have to pay anything as this is a quality issue. But will see what the offer is no doubt low like yours but I will hold out seeing your experience. Thanks for sharing it helps me a lot in negotiations.

That is bad news but are you sure about the cause? The 1.8TSI engine has a timing chain, not a belt, and chain tensioner failure is the main cause of those engines failing catastrophically. If you bought the car new from a Skoda dealer, and it has a full Skoda dealer service history, you are well placed to pursue a claim for the repair as others have done. Have a read of the thread below if you haven't done so already, and seek advice from members if you need it.

Having pursued my case with Skoda for almost 2 weeks, the final offer I have got for a new engine is 70% plus 50% labour cost leaving me with a bill of £1700. Although I feel that this is totally unacceptable, I have paid it just to get my car back but will be now be escalating the issue with Skoda. Any further advice you can offer will be well received. Also, the dealer told me that the replacement engine only has a 1 year warranty on parts and labour. Is this correct?

Any OEM part fitted by a Dealer and you have paid/made a contribution towards has a 2 year guarantee on parts and labour

Take it to trading standards and BBC watchdog?

It is a common failure reported on the forums along with mk2 fabia vRS drinking oil. Needs a journalist to start digging.....

I'd be interested to know what servicing regime the failed cars have been under ie long life, annual or more often.

Have been on variable servicing, but having read around this subject perhaps 10000 mile services are a better bet because of the more regular oil change. I am seriously considering going to this regime from now on. One piece of advice - if you are considering on keeping a car for more than the warranty period, buy he extended warranty. I usually keep cars for 5 to 6 years and this is the first one for which I have not bought an extended warranty. Silly me!!!

Not sure how that'd make any difference as none of the affected parts are touched/checked during a service

What is changed is the oil. For the fleet managers and cost accountants who now decide on service schedules failures outside their time frame don't signify. For a private owner or anyone with concerns for engineering 10k is a reasonable interval for oil to be expected to be at it's impressive best.

I thought it was stated on the other related thread that oil condition and/or level could affect the reliability of the part that fails. Is that incorrect?

Sadly, I bumped into this thread today!

I am in India and I drive the Octavia II (FL) 1.8 TSi (bought in Feb 2010). So far I have done 35000km and it's an absolutely trouble-free car and a joy to drive. But this thread shook me a bit. Any signs of the timing chain trouble I should watch out for?

Thread is quite abandoned for a long time. Do problems not appearing anymore ?

Welcome to the forum.

There are plenty more recent threads on the issues with the 1.8TSI,

maybe try another search on Briskoda or a Google, there is a thread on page 2 here to start with.
