Dual Climate - how's yours?

Featured Replies

Several recent longish trips in the mini heat wave (sorry British Summer) have left me somewhat underwhelmed with the Dual Climate system in my 2012 Urban TDi.

I've owned a number of Skoda's over the years, most of which have been fitted with climate / dual climate control (x2 Mk 1 Octavia vRS's, Yeti 1.2 TSi SE, Octavia 1.8T 20V 4x4 estate and FL Octavia 1.8 TSi 4x4) and several with just plain (manual) AC (Octavia II Ambiente 1.8 TSi, 2007 Roomster 1.9 TDi and most recently a 2012 Roomster 1.6 CR TDi SE+).

The previous climate / dual climate cars have been a largely "set and forget affair" in the hot weather, whereas the current Yeti seems to run virtually "flat out" regardless of whether set to the "Auto low" or "Auto high".

Yesterday for instance 4 of us were in the car for around 5 hours. The outside temperature was around 28 degrees and the climate control was set to 18 degrees. If set to "Auto low" the AC fan never dipped below 3 bars (the max for Auto low). When set to "Auto high" the fan seemed to fluctuate between 4 - 5 bars. We covered a variety of different driving types - urban, A road and some high speed M-way.

The air from the system is certainly very cold, so I have no particular concerns that the system is holed / running out of gas.

In comparison to the system in my 2012 Yeti, the system in my other car (11 year old petrol Octavia) seems to settle to a low fan spead after around 15-20 minutes of driving. Whilst maintaing a fairly constant and low fan speed.

My Yeti recently underwent it's first service at 10K miles (3 years free servicing deal) and I elected to change the cabin pollen filter, as it wasn't due to be changed until the major (? second) service.

In order to maintain a reasonably quiet cabin I found myself setting the fan speed manually at 2 bars, with the air directed out of the front dash vents and 18 degrees. This seemed to maintain a steady cabin temperature, although seems to defeat the point of "climate control".

Does anyone else notice this?

Happy with mine, it read a toasty 32c outside temp on the car thermometer

yesterday yet when I went and picked up Mrs G from the spa. When she got in

the car which was super cold by the time I got there, lets just say she was a bit nippy ;)

Thanks for the reply - mine certainly gets cold, it just seems the fans don't ever slow down :wonder:

My old Audi A4 and current Mk1 Octavia would have settled to a low / barely audible fan speed after maybe 15-20 minutes driving, whereas the Yeti never seems to lower the fan speed by much.

mine is great, fans are on full whack when you start off but soon drop down. I have Auto everything pressed including recirc, then I only ever change the temp usually between 20' and 21'  that is all you need.

Got to say we are very pleased with ours, get cooled down very quickly and then reduces fan speeds etc. We both have different settings with no issues.

Does the fan slow down if you have a slightly higher temperature set?  That would eliminate a problem with the basic logic of the system.

If you set the temp to its coldest the the fan stays on blasting cold air, in an air conditioned environment like a supermarket or office etc, the temp is usually set to around 21' or 20' so as to be cooler than outside, in the winter they are usually set to 21' or 22' so as to feel warm, there really is no need for maximum cold or maximum heat on a climatronic system.

Set it to auto and just adjust the temp to 20' you will be plenty cold enough.

One question James... Do you must press recirc button every time you turn on the ignition?? or your climate remember the setting??

(Sorry for the off-topic)

I have the recirc button on auto, it has two lights above the button, left one is ON and the right one is A auto, I also just press the Auto button so as the light on the right is on, slightly higher fan speeds, than the light on the left of the same button.

Turn the car off or on and the settings stay the same every time.

I don't have dual climate in my old Fabia, but apparently it works quite well

Mine not!... :wall:

If I push recirc button on auto (right light on), and if I park for a long time (more than an hour, I think) when I turn on the engine again the recirc has gone... I must to set it again.

Also, if I push the auto button (for the climate control), the recirc is going to off...

take a picture of your controls.  My Yeti is a 2011 MY12 build my controls look like this.

Mine are the same, only I have not got seats heating.

I've turned on the recirc button when I posted before, and I've just check it and still on... :drunk:

I'll check it tomorrow and I'll tell you if still work... Maybe it would be related with other setting (turning off the climate, open the roof, or something like that).

Thank you again James. I'll be back with updates...

Yes - the system does drop the fan speed if you increase the temperature. I suspect therefore the system is fully operational, just a little "under capacity" when asked to maintain 18 degrees.

Thanks JamesI - I realise the system blows with "full fans" at the maximum setting, be it the coldest (low) or hottest (high).

My personal preference has always been for 18 degrees!! (come rain or shine).

A BMW I ran some years ago would maintain 16 degrees without issue.

I find both the last climate and Audio settings seemed to be linked to the ignition key. I tend to get Classic FM and 20 degrees if my wife's been driving, whereas I'd hazard a guess that she gets 18 degrees and Radio5 live sports extra, if I've been driving

I've just been out for a 20 minute drive in the Yeti and at today's ambient temperature (~20 degrees) the system copes just fine - i.e. it quickly dropped to a 2 bar fan speed, when asked to maintain 18 degrees on Auto.

Yesterday however, at an ambient temperature of ~28 degrees, it insisted on 4-5 bar fan speed, when asked to maintain 18 degrees.

I guess it is just a shortcoming of the system in my car. I certainly prefer the look of the climate fascia, rather than the "knobs" on the non climate cars.

Of note I did consider a Yeti S back in 2009, but elected for an SE in light of the better ICE with SD capability (Bolero), leather multi-functional steering wheel and maxidot. Probably the most important extra was however the rear reading lights. The dual climate was very much a secondary consideration, as I've never felt a car was large enough to house 2 climates!!

The Urban is better again - Amundsen+ (DAB + Satnav + voice control), bluetooth and nice black bits stuck to the bodywork

Climate fascia is the same as mine - I do however have somewhat less "buttons" than your car - just ASR for me!!

that is a generic picture, I too only have ASR and off road button.

Not even an "off road button" for me - just a set of steelies, 2WD and a set of winter tyres!!

You say it's got back seat reading lights? Where's my manual!

Reading lights above each rear door are standard from the SE upwards. My old 2009 1.2 TSi SE had them, as does my 2012 Urban.  These were actually the main reason I originally went for a model other than the S.

At 40C plus, I have no qualms about the a/c of Yeti!!! It runs with 2 or 3 bars. I run the car with windows open for a few hundred meteres before switching on the a/c.
