ordering them for the octy too.

what size you going for?

IIRC....apart from the tread pattern Neros have a stiffer side wall.

Check out Jon's review of them.

Froma Rosso point of view I like em.....good grip and ride compromise is fine. Quieter than the F1's I'm running but probably due to Rossos being assymetrical design rather than directional.

A bit more expensive than F1s...around about

Not sure yet - busy looking at prices at the mo.

Doh....forgot to say I got the F1 for

might want to look at the Toyo T1R's as well.

Mytyres.co.uk or .com have them listed in that size for under a ton. thats inc vat and delivered to your door.

i have them on the back of the octy at the mo and will be having another pair on the front asap.

mytyres have them in 225/45/17 for

205/50s for the 17" rim are generally better because though they may be narrower, they have much tougher sidewalls, hence much better handling, and hence they being a bit more expensive.

I had 205/50s for my 15" rims, thinking the width would make a difference. I just recently bought 4 195/50s which have improved my handling by at least 70%, I can take turns I couldn't with the other tyres...not only that, I take those turns and I still don't start drifting....

If you're looking for performance tyres I'd go with Falkens. I've been using them a while and they haven't proved me wrong. The Azenis series is what you'd be looking for. Full of grip and very durable.

Neros would be my choice (I really like them). I'd rate them as my favourites short of going to something like Dunlop Supersport 9000 Race, Kumho Ecsta V700, Michelin Pilot Cup or Dunlop D01J.

How did you work out that 205/50 have stiffer side walls due them being narrower?

Surely the stiffness of the side wall is down to the construction and shouldn't matter what the width of tyre is.

If you look at it in those term then 225/45 wouls be stiffer because there's less side wall to flex?

Also amount of grip is just not down to size of tyre....tyre compound plays a major role....softer rubber generally equal more grip.

205/50/17 are more expensive due to them being not as popular as size as 225/45/17.

I'm going with mytyres for the 225/45/17.

Mate will fit them for me for a few pints.

Sidewall stiffness is also down to the load rating of the tyre. 91W will be stiffer than a 87W. It is all about how much a sidewall deforms with a given load. The higher the load it can take, the stiffer it is.

Oh and a 205/50 will be stiffer than a 225/50 as the 50 is the ratio of height to width. 225/45 is roughly (give or take a mm) the same as a 205/50.

SkodiRS, low-profile tyres always have tougher sidewalls, reason being low-profile tyres are manufactured for fast cars & sports cars in general. Believe me when I say this, because I'm experiencing this now with my brand new tyres, which are narrower, but the profile 50& profile makes'em low profile with tougher sidewalls. Like I've already said, I'm taking hard corners without losing control at at least 12kmph faster than I could with my older 205/50s.

Basically, say I'm doing 80kmph on a tight twist with the 205s, and the tyres are already screeching...With my new tyres I'm able to do 90+kmph, and they don't even screech then.

Mil, that is what I said, if you don't change the width but drop the aspect ratio, it will be stiffer - however, your speedo will be out by nearly 2% (going from 205/50 15 to 195/50 15)

Might explain the corner speed difference too (at least partly) :D

Actually, the 2.0 comes standard with 195/50s, I thought by buying 205/50s i'd improve handling. So when my first 195s wore out I bought the 205s. Was never really happy with them, performance-wise and looks wise.

215 45 would be better than the 195/50, same rolling circumference, but a wider tyre. :D

Will my speedo be out if I go to 225/45's?

Nope, not to any great degree. Most on here do the swap, especially as it is so much cheaper :D

0.39% difference btw

0.39% difference btw

It all adds up, especially with the inaccuracy of the speedo as standard.

Is there any decrease in MPG with having the extra rubber on the road?

Nope, not a noticeable one anyway.

I'm talking 15" rims for the 195/50s, 215/45s aren't available for 15s...if they were they'd look real funy

I think I may have misunderstand what you meant by "width". I took it to mean width of tyre as opposed to profile, which could be described as being depth of side wall.

So if this is the case then you're correct.

You've gone up a width size but retained the profile...you're greater speed could be put down to better grip due to greater contact patch. Side wall stiffness, as long as load rating are the same, should be no different.
