En France, en vacance...

Featured Replies

Got the new roofbox on. All surprisingly painless. Rear seats out tonight then a good muck out before loading for Portsmouth early Friday, and the o/n to St Malo.

The car gods permitting, we'll be on-site on the banks of the Dordogne by vin rouge time Saturday.

Keep safe all.

Happy holidays, and safe driving Mike.

Don't forget your TWO breatherlizer kits AND a reflective jacket you can put on while still in the vehicle.

Compulsory in France I believe.

  • Author

Thanks Mac. Hi viz jackets all ready to hang inside, and breathalysers in the glovebox.

This is France though. The devices are still compulsory, but they've deferred indefinitely the penalty for not having them  :wonder:

Lovely quality pic of the Yeti, I really like it in red livery, what is the camera?...... :sun:

Thanks looby. I have a Nikon DSLR, and a compact, but that pic was actually taken with my phone, a Google/LG Nexus 4.

I dialled the picture size back from 8M to 1.3M. I'm thinking of a blog so needed to try a lower res so I can do everything via the phone.

I can see my Nikon compact languishing in a drawer now, the phone cameras are getting so good.

The car was a demo vehicle. Our only requirement was a petrol DSG, and we'd been prepared for a long wait. Then the dealer said, "we've got a red one, you can have it next week" ! The red wouldn't have been our first choice, but we love it now. Fun car, fun colour

Breathalysers not needed 'on board' anymore - a nice little earner for the lobbyist here a la frog for them, he also produces the only attested version, but no one actually did a comparison of results with official kit ----    Dohhhhh la france?!!!!

Things in life don't come much cooler than this........ :sun:

cant wait :)

Michael,

I live 5 miles from Beynac. Forecast here next week is for 34-36C daytime highs and no rain! Bin the breathalysers, they are history. I will keep an eye out for you, I have a Stone Grey 140CR 4x4 Yeti, LHD on French plates, one of only 2 Yetis in the area (the other one is black and lives in Domme).

Have a great holiday!

  • Author

Thanks nom. Wave if you see a red one on UK plates. It'll be us trying to keep cool  :sun:

Michael,

Do you have Amundsen satnav in your Yeti? If so, do you have/need France? I have.......

Yes, got a garmin add on.

St Malo and Cherbourg in from last year, now added Beynac, Sarlat, Bergerac, Bordeaux, Castlenaud etc  :sun:

Let me know if you need any info on the area, markets, restaurants etc.

  • Author

Very kind of you nom. There's actually a couple of things. I can see smaller Carrefours etc in the area. Where would the nearest large supermarket be from Beynac? Sarlat?  Bergerac direction?

We pick up our daughter from Bergerac airport there on Monday and can see us going out that way and on to Bordeaux.

The other thing is it's our wedding anniversary whilst we're in France. I've seen mixed reviews on the Beynac restaurants and will ask the campsite for recommendations, but do you have a favourite local restaurant you could recommend, say around the 50 euros pp plus wine mark?

Much obliged.

Mike

Sarlat has a revamped Carrefour, a brand new Lidl and a tired LeClerc. I tend to avoid Sarlat at this time of year because of the volume of tourist traffic. Having said that you can get to Lidl and LeClerc without going into the town centre. There is a reasonable Carrefour in St Cyprien which also hosts the best street market in the area on Sunday mornings. If you're going to Bergerac Airport there is a big newish Intermarche (?) on a roundabout near the airport but no good for perishables in this weather, too far from home.

As for restaurants, La Petite Tonnelle in Beynac is ok. www.restaurant-petite-tonnelle.fr. A table on the terrace out the front is nice but will need to be booked. And it is walking distance from the campsite. A bit further afield in Daglan is le Petit Paris http://www.le-petit-paris.fr/ where a table on the front terrace will need to be booked and the food/wine/ambience will not disappoint. But it means driving!

The best value food is to be had at lunchtime. One of our favourites is at Nabirat where there is a small bar/restaurant called Le Diabolo-Fraise. 0553 59 36 83. You can't miss it, there's nothing else in Nabirat. Here you will find a 5 course set menu lunch with wine and coffee for 13€ ! It is off the tourist track. I usually phone to check what the plat de jour is and book a table on the terrace. Arrive between 12 and 1230. It is incredible value compared to the myriads of duck and chips places in Sarlat.

I'm happy to help with more info if needed!

Copious notes taken nom. Thank you so much!

Don't the above couple of posts show what a great community this is?

  • Author

Indeed it is

Anyone needing to know about curry houses in Baildon, I'm yer man  :giggle:

Another lunchtime tip if on the move, if you pass a bar, restauraqnt ouvrier with lots of white vans outside, its a good place to stop for a resonable meal, no pretentions, just good wholesome food and drink as above around 13 - 14€/head!
