Does anybody else find LED - DRL's 'aggresive'?

Featured Replies

I actually saw my first OctyIII, white, with what I can only presume has the Bi-Xenons.

I have always thought that LED DRL's are aggresive, and although the Octy looks nice, I am sure that these lights are now being designed more for aesthetics than the original purpose.

I did however prefer the lights on my OctyII to how they are now.

am I the only one that thinks this.

I like them, if they catch your eye then they are doing their job.

I'm afraid you are at the moment as I'm siding with the Sith Lord. ;)

I think the LED day running lights are infinitely better than the boring standard items. They are bright, so they do their job. But I would be prejudiced in favour as I specced the bi-xenon lights on my car!

Aggresive? They are very nice. Look again ;)

In a word Yes.

Especially new Audis in dull conditions. :rain:

At least the Octavia LED's are a bit more subtle than the "Tokyo-at-night" Audi ones

Nope, I don't

They're way too bling on too many cars and I WILL find a way to turn mine off if I got for an Octavia III.

I've already discounted a non-VAG model because the dealer checked and there's no way to turn them off on that one.

Leave daytime lights for bikes, and if its dusk/dark - then go for full lights.

They've become the new "chrome" in my opinion i.e. something to imply a high spec, that has now been reinforced by legislation.

Don't get me wrong. They were inevitable for new models once the legislation applied, but they were seized upon by manufacturers as a cool tool to hijack some of the fairy dust from e.g. Audi RS and other halo models.

Before anyone shouts - I know I'm in the minority here, but have an opinion nevertheless.

@Jeeves, you are right. Some manufacturers did get carried away with this fad. Look at the FL Passat, that whole car is a demonstration in how-not-to-do-bling, and the DRLs on that are just hideous/stupid.

At least the O3 ones are more restrained, a simple line of light.

Surely the most offensive, overpowering, aggressive and blinding lights award must go to Mercedes -by a country mile. I'm sure that it's something they'd describe as 'road presence'

If the LED ones are like the non-LED version then they can be turned off quite easily in the setup menu on the touch screen

Mine only come on if I have the lights on Auto or sidelights.

If the switch is off, then they are off.

@hawkster - I think they can be turned off as you say without any problem...

There's no option to turn mine off. Maybe it's a MY13 thing?

That's because it's old spec, before the DRL euro rules took effect.

Later Audis have an impressive set of fairly lights on all the time, particularly the higher spec ones or the simpler ones with the £1000+ Xenon packs.

It's all about making sure people know you spent the money.  More bling for the big spenders! :D

When I first started driving, I put some spots under my Renault5 and they were on all the time.

Not only did I get pulled over by the police, but my now MIL kept saying 'you have got your foglights on'. Now all she says is 'you have left your lights on'.

I definately see there place on the road, but some of the ones you see are verging on hilarious.

I remember hearing Jeremy Clarkson describe the Audi R8's lights as 'like a council estate at Christmas' -I make him right on that

My DRLs are the same as 2012 cars which are the latest examples

of them before the current 8V A/S3 came along earlier this year.

I'm glad I can turn the off though. I'd quite like someone to vagcom

scandinavian mode though. Then you get them at full brightness

with the bi xenons instead of dimmed. (They still dim when you indicate though

on the side of the indication) And DRLs function as normal but also including

rear lights on the rest of the time.

Yes I know Garry.

But any new models introduced since the new rules (2011 IIRC) must have DRL fitted.

On some there is a way to turn them off in the fusebox, but not via dash switch.

What I was saying was that your system is not current spec.  2009-2012 is old spec so works differently, even if it actually makes more sense.

I find Audi now have a policy that it's all about the bling.  The more you spend the more you get.

Just so you can make sure your neighbours know you spent £££££ because Audi are quite common now and they need a way to seperate lots of cars that look nearly the same.  Base spec masses and less common versions worthy of the badge.

next gen Audi with DRL's

so is that way we see some with just a striaght strip, some with a 'smile' strip, and some (as I saw yesterday) with full, all round the headlight....

do you think the people who buy these cars actually know what they are for, or is it a case of 'I want the lights that are the brightest that make sure people know I have a little willy!!!!!!'

i find most led drl's far to bright and they are also blinding, yes i know they are intended for safety. Why dont they run at the brightness when an indicators on you can still se them clearly. my biggest gripe with them is, they are not a directional lights so the light output just spreads like a fog light.

I fail to understand how any lights could be classed as 'aggressive'. However, I do favour single element DRLs (tungsten element or LED), purely from a safety point of view. What I think are hideous, and should be banned, are the multi LED strip DRLs found on Audi, Land Rover, Citroen etc. etc. which to my mind should be limited to the clown's circus car!
