  • Equally the most expensive is rarely best value. The trick is to find the right product that gives the features and reliability that you want at the right price. Bit like the Octavia...

Another spin on it from the same source back in April! What is the quote. .... there are lies, damned lies and statistics? ??

As Sir Winston Churchill once said "I only believe statistics that I have manipulated myself".

@ gadgetman - people buy Mac Books which are more expensive than other lap tops simply because they want the best. In the same way people buy Miele washing machines rather than Candy. Cheapest price is seldom best value.

Sadly the customer base for Apple is shrinking and those that are left are questioning style v price.

Same is happening with supermarkets, holidays and just about every walk of life.

The reason why Apple is declining on certain product ranges is the lack of innovation and direction since Steve Jobs died. Don't labour under the wrong impression that Apple products are all about style, that is not correct. iOS is the finest operating system on the market bar none. Nothing Microsoft produces comes close. Yes Apple products are not cheap, but they are far from the computer equivalent of Bang & Olufsen, they are not just expensive pretty boxes. Different scenario to say Audi and Skoda, where the same internals are packaged in smarter exteriors to justify a substantially higher price. Why are Apple at the top of nearly every customer satisfaction survey?

For me Apple is the right product, much like the Octavia I drive is, but other Skoda products are not. I wouldn't want an Octavia VRS, for example, as I don't see Skoda, much less the Octavia, as a sporty product.

Ref apple sales, tablets are biting sales but also their hefty prices in the current economic climate. How can a £1000+ mac book be justified when you can buy a similarly or more powerful spec laptop for 1/2 the price?

I agree the Macbook Pro is a challenge to justify as there are some other very similar products for much much cheaper and its hard to justify the premium. When it comes to the ultrabook format i.e. the Macbook Air i still think they have the best product. The other manufacturers are struggling to produce something that competes with it for similar price.

Here's me thinking this thread was about the important topic of Amundsen satnav updates. Seems to have strayed somewhat off topic.

Agree, perhaps the not so important PC vs Mac argument could be taken elsewhere!

Another forum I'm on is Rennteam.com a German based sports car site, there they have an Off Topics Board, maybe the Admins / Mods could have a similar one here.

Already a forum here for that, called 'technology shed'.

I know, but it's not broad enough IMO.

Well obviously Tech Shed would be fine for the off topic nature of some elements of this thread (Apple Macs), but there's plenty of other forums on here, including http://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/82-off-topic-chat/

It's as broad as people post there. There is also an off topic forum ;-)

Back on topic, what is so special about the Skoda SD card? What if you don't have one?

I don't understand that either -I thought an SD card was an SD card, unless it's been pre-coded somehow?

SD cards can be locked to a device, case in point, Garmin supply some of their mapping products such as City Navigator Europe that is locked to an SD card. If you try and copy the contents to another SD card, it won't work.

Perhaps Skoda / VAG do similar.

Yeah Garmin lock the SD cards to a device. I think you can use the cards with any device but once its been used with a device you can't use it with another. This would indicate that the device does something to the data on the card to say it can't be used on other one. I do wonder if you can clone it before being used whether it would work.

Sorry to hijack topic. Does Amundsen system plays video files? I have a folder with Video files on my SD card some in avi format, some in mkv format, but amundsen in my car wont detect the folder at all.

If it plays video files, what format the files should be ?

Columbus plays video, Amundsen does not.

I stand corrected, humble apologies - found it!!!! Came here to learn about Octavia 3 and got tunnel-visioned.

Columbus plays video, Amundsen does not.

Thanks Dodgy. Someone said earlier that they were able to play videos on Amundsen. I cant find the post here, but thanks for clarifying.

Maybe they're right, wouldn't be the first time Skoda marketing material is less than accurate. I was just going by the various Skoda produced videos and brochures.

Incorrect!!!

The Amundsen does play video! I have connected my iphone via the mitsumi connector and watched all the videos and films through the Amundsen. They were not all purchased films/video either. Some were converted to format that iTunes recognizes so I could import and save to my iphone. I'm not sure if films could be played directly off SD card though. I never tried as have never needed to!!

I refer you to post #46 ;-)

Another undocumented feature? I dunno, I just have no confidence in Skoda manuals and brochures!

So lets get this topic back on track.

I updated my map data today. The download and transfer to SD went ok-thanks to my father inlaw who has a windows pc. All great only, it wasn't recognized on my sat nav! On closer inspection it was because it had unzipped into a folder which had put the data into a "sub" folder which was not recognized. Moving files out of folder sorted the problem. So fairly straight forward.

Lol, I got on my soap box and said my bit before reading your next post. ;-)
