Stone Chip Repair

Featured Replies

Just after some advice off people, I have a few stone chips on the front end of my car and they are starting to rather annoy me now. I have bought the correct Black Magic chip repair paint and some clear coat. I'm just wondering how exactly to go about it to gain the best results?

  1. Panel wipe the area to be sorted
  2. Apply the base coat and leave to dry
  3. Apply a layer or two of clear to and leave it proud of the original paint surface and allow to dry
  4. Once dry wet flat the area with a block and 2000's till its flat with the original surface
  5. Polish the area of the panel back up.

Does this sound the best way to achieve a damn near perfect repair or would others suggest a better way of doing it?

Sounds about right, but leave the paint for at least a week to be safe, as there is a slight risk of pulling the whole lot out whilst sanding if not completely dry.

Not sure what you're going to be using to apply the paint, but I used a tooth pick to slowly build up the paint to just above the bonnet, then sanded back. This was to make sure that all of the chip was filled so not to leave a very small ring.

I finished with 3000 grit to try as someone suggested it would be easier to polish out than the 2000 but I couldn't say either way?!

Personally, I'd sand sooner than later - but carefully. New paint is likely softer and will abrade faster than the surrounding older paint.

I've used parallel lines of masking tape or similar with a small hardwood sanding block (read minute in general sanding terms). General idea is the tape gets sanded down and then the bump, only lightly touching the surrounding paint surface.
