Well if you get a proper CAI the air filter is going to sit low behind the front bumper grill. So I would not recommend driving through rivers or fords etc   .

I don't think you are going to get a answer of deepest because most folks with a CAI would not take a route that is going to cause a issue.

I have heard of a few folks having hydro locking due to this but very few and i bet they were stupid enough to either not know that had a CAI or did not slow down to the road conditions.

If you are concerned then don't fit one is the best answer.

I have had mine fitted for 5 years and never had any issues driving through the odd rain flooded road.

A CAI is just an upside-down snorkel

Mate had a dc5 integra. Drove thro a puddle with a long reach aem cai on it ended up it threw a conrod out the block.. Ive always been wary of them since. But maby its cos it wos a jap scrapper and not a good quality skoda :)

Looks like the snorkel is the way forward fellas, time to dust off the hole cutters.

Ive not had any problems on rain floodes rains , been caught out once or twice tho . Just driving to work this morning and roads was alittle flooded mainly side of the roads and in some places the middle where it was run across due to the storm we had and got me thinking how safe they was .

Can't you extend the CAI To the Drivers side grill ? Less chance of sucking water in then

Last year when I came across a flooded road with a civic type r stopped on the other side I drove with the passenger wheels on the footpath as I wasn't gonna risk it lol

I've had water come in the front passenger window when crossing a river, and the back has floated a few times - but that was in my modded discovery with snorkel! :)

We spend alot of time pulling knackered cars out of floods. Best advice has already been stated here, don't go through it.

Can't really as the SMIC is there and the routing of pipe work would be near impossible.

The passenger side is where there is space and easier routing  from the MAF.

I had a cai and drove though a puddle that reached to the bottom of the door

Went nice and slowly and no problems, although the clutch did start to slip a little, must have got wet!

Don't think you need to drive as deep as that

I know someone who was hit with a £2k engine replacement bill when his cai drank some water and hydro locked his engine :(

I think ppl who hydrolock their engines deserve it for being completely stupid imo

+1

As stated earlier if you observe the road conditions and know your car is low, has a CAI etc etc then  make the appropriate actions. nuff said.

Human nature still comes into play though - "I can get through that ..."  :giggle:

Yes thats true . Least it be ok if you get caught out if you hit a inch or 2 of water .

What would happen if you were to raise the end up by a couple of inches? so cut it off part of the pipe so that the filter is next to the battery?

If you have to drive through it just take off the cai then your Ok so long as the water is below your maf but as said not worth the risk

Really can't see what the problem is here.

Filter is well enough shielded from the elements on a day to day basis. I wouldn't drive my car through a deep puddle with a standard airbox on let alone with my CAI. If you were really that fussy you could as DBP said shorten the pipe but you would need a slimmer filter too.

Of course you're going to draw in water if you've got your foot all the way down in a deep puddle.

I am not sure that owners will be carrying a tool kit for CAI removal at the pint a puddle looks too risky. :giggle:

It is simple don't drive like a lemon knowing a large risky puddle is there,  as has been stated several times;

I can't believe that anyone who is sensible having any issues TBH

TBH Damian if you are going to mess with the CAI in the first place to avoid potential risk , don't fit one.

Shortening it is hassle,  as the reason it sit's where it does is to avoid the Battery, headlight back and wiring loom area and get some level of cold air being sucked in from the bumper grill .

Think if you cut pipe shorter you would have issue fitting any filter and if you did fit a much shorter/smaller,  filter it would be right behind light making a total waste of time with decent airflow the CAI was intending to do IMHO.

They are used widely so i cant see they break shizzal

Its just a case of manufactuers covering bottoms :D

i did play around with that idea a while back. my filter was always wet and no i didnt drive through puddles just mway spray

just to add  thats a 3" filter so is hooge lol

Oh just me then Bowders lol always keep the most generic bolt size sockets and multi screw driver in the boot and obviously varying size cable ties
