Interior lights don't work when doors open

Featured Replies

I have just bought my 1st superb today, all is good apart from a few minor niggles.

When I open any of the doors the interior lights do not work.  The puddle lights work and the door open symbol lights on the dash.  All the interior switches are set for open door and they all work when turned to the on position.  I have scanned the car with vag-com and the convenience module has no errors..

Any ideas?

Check the convenience control unit under the passenger front carpet for water.

Also check the taped wiring node in the harness near to the convenience control unit. If the car has seen any rain water entry, the node (which is the live feed to nearly all of the interior lights) will be a corroded green mess.

That would have been recommendation number 2 if there proved to be water in the front. Then our usual speech on plenum bungs, ecu boxes, bonnet cable grommets etc etc etc.

The B5.5 is like a camel (handles like one too). It can store a vast amount of water without it being obvious...

Thanks guys.. The wife has a 2001 passat so I know about the faulty CCM modules..  I thought though that because everything is working and no vag-com errors for the CCM that it would be OK, maybe thought it was a coding issue with vag-com..

Will take a look when I get a chance..

Whats the node look like?  I had a nosey at the CCM but someone has been in there before as it's all taped back together.  All dry at the minute though.

The node is a bunch of wires that are crimped together and have a heat shrink over them. There are three or four node joints under the carpet on the passenger side at the back. There are some pictures in Baker21's thread that I took when I repaired his for the same fault.

OK, I checked all the nodes I could see this evening, I evening just cut off the crimp and re soldered each one, still no interior lights although I think I got the front foot well lights working as there was one wire which snapped easy enough and showed signs of corrosion.  Anything or anywhere else I can check.  As I said, all the lights work when switched on manually and also the door open light illuminates when a door is open and the puddle lights work.. Any particular wire to trace for a break?

I can't edit my post above.. doing some more digging and think the next place is the rear foot well I think.  Also the rear speakers don't work (tweeters work). so will try and check those too over the next couple of days..

Had another go at this again last night.. got it all sorted.. It was actually a node with blue wires in it, but I ended just cutting and soldering nearly all the nodes as every one looked suspect.. bloody water leaks.. everything is dry but the loom was well taped up so removed all that to find the suspect wires..

Glad to hear it and thanks for the update.  Did you get any pictures to add?
