Is the tread lifting?

Featured Replies

Checking over he wife's car and I noticed that the tread on both front tyres look as if they are lifting at the edge. They were fitted as a pair in November 11 and the car hasn't done 10000 miles in that time.

We're only using it locally and I'm taking it back to the tyre service as soon as possible (tomorrow).

Any advice please?

To me the last 2 pics show pothole or kerbing damage

Doesn't look good, I would definitely get them changed.

My feelings - not sure abour whether it's damage as it's on both sides - I think it might be budget tyres - I'll find out & post

Thanks

That looks like tread breakup to me. Are the inside edges of the tyres doing this too, because that should rule out kerbing.

Took it back to the supplier, the tyres are faulty and still within the three year warranty. Fitted a new set, ( had to pay) old set gone back to the manufacturer for a proprtionate refund based on the wear.

They've had no problems with this batch but a year or two ago they had a lot of problems with one particular brand of 225 45 18s.

I'm fairly happy as they didn't try to claim we'd run them under inflated or kerbed etc. In fact pressures were spot on and tracking good.

What brand were they?

Please tell me they weren't Sunew, if so they are a very dangerous tyre. I had two fronts fail MOT within 6 months of being fitted I had them all replaced with Falkens for safety reasons. The falcons have no been on 2+ years and still have 3-4mm tread all round. I have learnt my lesson and will never fit budget tyres again the sunews cracked on the inside so I didn't even realise they were dangerous. It was only after the MOT inspector invited me to have a look under the car at how bad the cracks were I realised. He said he had the same problem with that brand and another frequently.

They are! Thanks for the warning I will be keeping a very close eye on them.

The owner of the company is someone I have dealt with for over 20 years and is very honest and honourable. He once tried to talk me out of buying a set of (big) premium tyres for a BMW 5 series estate on the basis that I would never use all the performance available but they would wear (on the rear) at a ridiculous rate. 10000 miles later I returned and fitted his budget recommendation which was up to my performance requirements (motorway, fast A roads and heavily loaded towing a boat) and were still OK when I sold the car 20k miles later.

However I will keep avery close eye on them - the car is likely to do 5k miles per year, used to lazily enjoy the sun or shop locally. Superb is our motorway muncher and I look forward to the pleasure (!) eventually of. selecting and sourcing quality 225 40 18s :-)

To be honest i still dont buy overpriced tyres but i do now ask people with the same type of car what they use before making a decision.(where briskoda comes in useful). I have to say it was only one specific type of sunew tyre that i had a problem with and i can't speak for the rest of the range. And im sure someone with some vehicle has had a problem with falken for example. However i now know that falkens suit my car and i will only buy them in future assuming they stay reasonable price. But i will never choose a tyre again based soley on price. P.S. just check regularly when you check the psi of the tyre with a mag light the inside shoulder of the tyre for cracks, they were severe on my car.

Thanks. I bought them by going into Rob's store at the back of the garage and selected them based on their ratings - they were the best in stock.

I agree totally with what you said but I've used most premium brands and often been disappointed in some way - I used to do 25 - 30000 hard miles a year but those days are gone!

Credit where credit is due, after all this time the large Hampshire based tyre company admitted they had mislaid paperwork and agreed the tyres were faulty. They refunded 100% of the cost of the tyres. I didn't ask for 8 months interest as I was surprised to even get a refund.
