Damage to lower body plastic trim - dealer job?

Featured Replies

Having made it back from deepest Wales last Saturday )five hours from Fishguard to Chester - there must be a better way...) I decided that I owed it to the Yeti to give it a wash on Sunday.  While doing so, I was slightly perturbed to find that the plastic lower body trim appears to be coming adrift ahead of the offside rear wheel arch - see photo:

Poking about a bit I could see a white plastic clip within, which seemed to be supposed to be glued to the trim but looked to have become detached (see inset to above photo).  A firm-ish shove didn't get it re-attached.

I then discovered that the rubber sealing strip between the lower body trim and the front passenger door frame was slightly distorted, exposing the join between the parts - see second photo:

Poking around didn't give any great insights in to the problem in this case.

So, does anyone know whether these are things I can fix myself - and if so, how?  Or am I going to have to pay a visit to my local dealer to get them dealt with under what remains of my warranty?

Any sign of impact here? If still under warranty I'd get the dealer to sort it.

I can't see any evidence of impact.  I've always been in the car whenever it's been driven* and I don't recall anything happening that might have caused it.  Come to think, though, there is one exception to that: when it's been in for servicing.  But West End are pretty thorough about inspecting the car on drop-off and pick-up so I don't think it could have happened when they last had it.  It doesn't look like it would be easy to clout the car there in a car park bump.  I don't think an otherwise undetectable impact would explain the front passenger door sealing strip coming adrift, either.  All very puzzling.

So yes, it does look like another lunchtime will have to be given up to pootling out to Sighthill.  Hey ho.

* SWMBO does drive it, but only when we're sharing the driving on a long trip.

Do you use any of the hand car wash services? I used to sometimes when I had the Tiguan and once or twice they bobbed up on the door sills to clean the roof. Of course I quickly stopped them but I could see how this could the sprain the trims as your pictures show.

I've only ever washed the car myself and I've got a caravan step to get at the roof.  Good suggestion, though.  Could also have been a clumsy-footed passenger but I believe the only passengers I've had in the back since the previous time I washed it have been my Dad and SWMBO (when Dad was in the front) and they both sat on the nearside.

I managed to find a free 45 minutes at lunchtime today and popped in to West End.  They got the rear offside sorted in a few minutes (foolishly, I didn't watch what they did to fix it so can't do it myself if it happens again).  They reckon the dislodged sealing strip at the lower edge of front passenger door will need to be completely removed and re-fitted which is a rather longer job.  I think I'll have another fiddle with that myself before booking it in.  It's a bit of rubber that fits in a gap between a bit of metal and a bit of plastic - it can't be rocket science, surely?  Famous last words...

Well, a bit of finger grease (like elbow grease but it all comes from below the wrist) seems to have done the job getting the passenger deal sealing strip back in place.  So all is good...for now...
