My 2005 05 furby vRS has developed a weird feeling to the steering.

When the wheel is turned more than 10/15 degrees (either way) it seems to hit a 'barrier' which then takes a fair amount of effort to go beyond, and then the steering lightens-up and goes back to normal? the tyres are fine and there's no obvious tracking issues (other than a slight pull to the left which, from what i've read on here, is quite common)

It doesn't seem to happen below 15mph but it's very strong above 30/40mph.

I have booked it in at my dealer for a check-up but I was wondering if anybody else has/had the same problem or if anyone has any suggestions?

I certainly don't experience this - although I do get the slight "pull to the left" you mention...

Sounds like a problem with the PAS pump to me.

So, this pull to the left is quite normal then? It's just every car i've ever had (of various makes and models) has always pulled to the left, anybody know why this is?

I had a similar fault on the steering of my old saxo, the pump had gone :(

usually pull to the left is shorter drive shaft on that side as its the gearbox side

I always thought that the slight pull to the left was down to the natural camber of the road so ease rain pooring away to the side of the road.

When I was learning for the DAS on bikes thats what my instructor told me.

Thats why you dont drive so close to the kerb.

As for the problem , yes could be the pump or low fluid?

My car went in to Lightcliffe Skoda (Halifax) on Wednesday and it turns out the problem was a low level of steering rack oil! they also set the power steering correctly as it's been on the wrong setting since it was new! Oh well, problem solved, she's now handling better than ever

I think this is true to an extent, but over the same roads, my Mondy doesn't pull to the left at all whereas my Fabia pulled quite noticeably, despite the tracking being spot on, etc.

There was also a rumour that the pull to the left was so that if you fell asleep at the wheel, you didnt fly off into oncoming traffic, but that has a hint of urban myth about it tbh.

Instead you just drive into a load of houses and parked cars .........

That would imply that on left hand drive cars, the steering would pull to the right...

Any of our continental members care to comment?
