Yeti and Peugeot 2008

Featured Replies

Interested that there seems not yet to be anyone comparing the SM with the new(ish) Peugeot 2008. While there is no 4x4 version, it has a 'grip' system (whatever that is - some adaptation of ESP, I guess) which, allied to the all-season tyres fitted as standard, is claimed to be adequate for most on-road conditions (which is all that I suspect most Yetis encounter). Size-wise, it is also compact like the Yeti. A fully-spec'd top-of-the-range model (including panoramic roof, park assist, satnav, DAB etc) comes in at about £18,330. Any views, or any actual experience? I saw one in France recently, but it drove off before I could get close enough for a detailed look.

PS sorry about the errant first letter in the title - only noticed it after posting and can't seem to edit it!

There was a separate thread about the 2008. Personally I thought it was a very nice place to sit, and as an alternative to a 2wd yeti it's worth a look.

Yes, sorry - I missed that for some reason! On the whole, the Pug seems to be getting a reasonable press. I know some folk think that Peugeots are very unreliable, but I have a 207cc in France that I like very much and four of the five other (French) residents of my apartment block drive Pugs, all saying that they consider reliability etc. to be better than Citroen or Renault (and, being French, want to - and can - buy French cars!).

Thanks!

I like the look of it...

I also like the Yeti but think it is now starting to show it's age. I know the square / boxy styling of the Yeti appeals to buyers but I think it's ready for a nip and tuck.

Was in one on friday.

Really wanted to like it but i couldn't get over how close it was for my head to the side of the roof / door frame.

Clouted my head twice getting in and out and also banged my head going around a corner (somewhat vigorously).

Steering wheel was also a bit of a shirt button and i struggle to like french interiors (but that is more a personal thing).

Had the same issue with the renault captur too, although i didn't get to drive it.

I've only just got around to reading the latest Sunday Times and notice that Clarkson thinks the 2008 is really rather good (ie 'boring' in his terms, the big kid!). His only question mark is re reliability - but I'm not sure he has much evidence that Pugs are any longer as awful in that respect as he claims (and note my post #4 above re the French attitude).

.... Mea maxima culpa!

But - I ask again - is this fair to new Peugeots or just some hangover (deserved or not) from the past? There are a great many people around here driving quite old 206s and 307s and I can't recall ever seeing one in trouble at the roadside.

I will answer this in a long winded way.  There was a program on TV on the new Airbus A380 as it was launched regarding why it was delayed so much.  Normally the French engineers will do their bits in Toulouse and the German engineers will do their bits in Germany.  But because the first few planes were so delayed at some point the French engineers had to go and work in Germany.  This did not work out well.  The German engineers were asked why they don't like the French engineers and one summarised it:  "When something goes wrong a German engineer will go back to the plan and work backwards until he finds the problem, fix it and note this so it won't happen again.  When a French engineer finds a problem on the other hand, he does not consult the plan and just makes a stop gap repair there and then - a botch in other words".  This meant that every bit a French engineer touched was DIFFERENT and also DIFFERENT to what the plans said.

There was thus a basic difference in the way a French engineer thinks to the way a German engineer thinks.  That is the difference between these two nations: it is cultural.  So you might get a French car that just works - I had a trouble free Renault for two years.  But if you get one that had been tinkered with (on the factory floor even at assembly time) no-one will know how to fix it or get it right since the tinkered bits are all botched repairs.  Painting with a wide brush here I know, but the gist of it is just the cultural differences in ASSEMBLY.  The basic design of either a French or German car will be similar (I suspect).

Interesting - but I'm not convinced how far from (or close to) urban myths (or sheer prejudice) these supposed 'cultural differences' really are.

I agree, hence stating I'm painting with a wide brush. I was trying to offer another explanation for why French electronics have always had a bad reputation...

Have a look at the 2013 JD Power survey (just googled it) The highest ranking Peugeot was the 3008 at 63rd place all other Peugeot's came in the 100's.

And where did the Yeti come?..... Second place out of 116. Only beaten by the Supurb. Not bad for a car that has been aound for over 3 years. Skoda as a manufacturer came in 4th, Peugeot came 24th out of 27 manufacturers. These results are formed from gathering owners opinions of their own vehicles so is quite a reliable source. In other words Skoda wins hands down.

Nice looking car, but I would never buy another pug.

I had a test of the 2008 but it felt a bit claustrophobic for me (6ft2) and there wasn't wasn't much room in the back either (not when you stick 2 20something lads in the back anyway).

It was nice enough to drive, but just didn't come close to the Yeti for me.

Much smaller car, the 2008. It is basically a 208 estate pretending to be a crossover. Clever, if cynical marketing. I looked at one but it was too small for my needs.
