What puts you off?

Featured Replies

Finally defeat has been conceded and the eldest admitted that she cannot drive a car without power steering. Shame really as the 86C Polo I found for her is an absolute belter.

 So.

She wants a Polo still but one with PAS. Not a problem (so I thought) time to look for a newer model. However trawling Auotrader and the like i'm starting to notice more and more adverts that really put me off looking at the car on offer- aside from the 'scene tax'. The biggest turn off (and always comes at the end of the ad) is the 'NO OFFERS' seller. Why? Why say that you're unreasonable and unrelenting and most likely have a distorted view/ belief of a vehicle's worth? I've got cash in my pocket and I want to buy but you're guaranteeing that I won't come and look at your car!

Am I being picky? What drives you away from purchasing a car?

Badly written adverts and rubbish pictures would put me off.  I'd also avoid anything that's been 'slammed' and/or running on nasty looking after market alloys.

Sorry couldn't resist it!

Damn you! Caught me before I could edit.

Thats happened to me before but the smell/look of the folding and they succumb

Nothing wrong with advertising 'No Offers' or Fixed Price if you know what you want for your car or house or anything else and you can not be bothered with 'Time Wasters',

and 'No Time Wasters/tyre kickers' should not offend anyone other than 'Road Testers' and 'Tyre Kickers'.

The country is sinking under the weight of used cars for sale,

the world is your oyster without needing to bother going to see sellers that have adverts that annoy you.

Or watch their adverts and the car not selling and when they might be getting desperate, call them and ask if they are 'Open to Offers'.

Poor pictures. Really does my head in that. Can get a bargain though if you are prepared to take a gamble with a pants advert.

Its not the needing to see adverts that bother me, its getting to the end of the speel only to find the seller is a doughnut!

2 minutes out of your life that you will never get back.

Much like my posts.!!!

You want to read my 'for sale' adverts. ****

Lol your posts are normally worth reading! Its not just two mintues though as 'NO OFFERS' tend to list everything including bolted on wings, bumper, tyres (some legal), windows that wind up then wind back down again...

When I was searching for my Octy 4x4 I got numerous hits for 'we also sell coupes, 4x4s' etc in the description. That fine, except if I wanted a vitara, I would have bloody looked for one of those!

A common annoyance on Autotrader is dealers who list the 'price' of the car as the deposit or one months finance repayment. Makes it a real pain for anyone searching for a cheap car to sort through all this crap. As if anyone actually thinks "Well I was looking for a £500 banger, but instead I think I'll pay £500 a month for the next 5 years for a nearly new Merc....."

Another one they take liberties with is the mileage. You put an upper limit on the mileage but the search comes back with cars claiming to have say 250 miles on the clock.......when its blatently obvious from the price/age of the car it must actually be 250,000 miles.

Damn you! Caught me before I could edit.

Haha busted! Its normally me that gets picked up on typo's but that was a corker!

Pictures that the seller cannot be bothered to put the right way up. If I wanted to look at a car on its side or roof I'd go to the local breakers yard.

Service history. No, actually the first 30k (i.e. when under warranty), the next 70k is not available (i.e. when no one gave a flying one).

I actually let a little giggle out myself, I wrote it and posted it then went back over it again and realised I made an error. Noticed no one posted and for a second I thought I got away with it until you posted after :(

The ones that don't bother putting in mileage.

I assume it's well into 6 digits in that case

You very nearly did get away with it, when i hit the reply button it actually embedded your corrected version write. which made me double take and question my own sanity. However because the page hadn't done a refresh it was still incorrect in your post so i had to copy and paste it into the quote. All that hassle just to make you look silly. Its this forum mate its getting to me i normally couldn't give a monkeys what people type but there are so many 'spelling police' on here picking on me i jumped at the chance to get my own back :giggle:

Back to the topic - the ones i hate are usually crafted very well to lure you into visiting the car only to find its a heap of ****.

The words Ford and Vauxhall are generally enough to put me off.

Aside from things about the car I dont like, the advert specifically;

No or incorrect miles listed

Poor pictures, or none of the inside

Poor spelling & grammar

Other missing info

I dont see a issue with "no offers". If you put a motor up for cheap because you need shot of it etc then a nice clear message telling people dont **** me about is a good idea.

I recently went to look at a car with a one of the younger people from work. He had phoned the seller during the day and was told that they would take £2000 if bought that evening. They said yes. We got there with £2000 to be informed that the price had gone up £100 because the owner had taken it for an MOT earlier on in the day. I laughed, the young chap from work bought the car but had he not been able to scrape another £100 together it would have been a complete waste of time going. STOP changing the price. Thats all I have to say on the matter.

Edited by Money hungry

My neighbour was adamant his car was worth £4500 and he would not take a penny less so included the the words "No Offers"

He never got an offer even at the asking price, in fact he never had anyone come to view the car apart from another neighbour who was looking to buy a car for his son and could not agree on a price.

After 2 months of advertising he got fed up and eventually sold it to We Buy Any Car.com for (trumpets)  £3000.

Belligerent git he is, been moaning about it ever since.

What ever it says on the odometer ;)

other side of the coin are people who turn up to buy your car and think they can make you an insulting offer, even if your car is realistically priced
