Cracking tyres continental

Featured Replies

I've just noticed cracking along the tread edge on all 4 tyres but more on the fronts ? Tyres are continental contact 2e contipremium 205/55R 16 H on the golf any ideas ? Are these safe ? Could this be a warranty issue ? They've done 20k approx and loads of tread still

I don't like the look of that, particularly since the crack looks to be about where Conti change from the main tread rubber to the substrait.

Specifically, I have this nasty fealing that the tread may be starting to delaminate.

I'm of the opinion that it looks a bit worrying.

I'd certainly be asking a decent tyre shop about that.

Quite a few similar threads around with similar problems.

In this thread the title is Michelin, but the Cracked tyres are Dunlops

**** Post #8 is interesting! **** Gives good advice to anyone with cracked tyres.

EDIT,

having read many of the posts on many other forums after googling 'continental tyres cracking'

Best to contact Continental and have them arrange to have the tyres inspected.

I thought the same.

Thanx George I've sent conti an email ;)

Post 8 sound familiar :) but all four ! Could it be this summer or manufacture problem, could they delaminate :(

How often do you check the tyre pressures.

ie

Do you set them for the cold temperatures in Winter, warmer maybe Spring, Hot Weather Summer, we had a few days,  then set again in Winter?

The pressure changes with the Ambient Temperatures.

I check mine weekly and because of the move ( house) I've not done for 6 weeks :( and always at 2.2 bar all round

A slight drop in pressures wouldn't cause that. It's definitely strange though

Maybe it is the hot summer ? I've contacted continental for them to inspect them , four friggin tyres though ! £400 at least :( so I will not be buying continentals !

I don't buy Contis because while they have plenty of grip once they get to 3mm the grip noticeably drops off. You don't even have to check the level to know. My Conti rears are down to 3mm so I'll be changing those soon too. I'll check them later to see if there is anything wrong with them.

Well it looks like contis have a 72 month warranty in the USA

Eligible Tires are covered by this Limited Warranty and Policy for a maximum of 72 months from the date of purchase determined by the new vehicle registration date or new vehicle sales invoice showing date of purchase. If an eligible Continental/General Tire brand passenger, light truck, or Temporary Spare tire used in normal service, becomes unserviceable from a condition other than those listed under Section 4 during the time or treadwear periods shown below, it will be replaced with a comparable new Continental/General Tire brand tire according to the following paragraphs (1) and (2).

I am running 'Much Cheapness' tyres until Winter time, which i rate and others might consider Ditch Finders.

50 squids a tyre.

215/40R 17's marked M+S,

Very Good in the Dry and actually OK in the Wet, so so in the cold, But not winter tyres.

(reviews will no doubt slag them.)

'Goodride SV 308',  ZR & 87 W Speed & Load rated.

Nice strong sidewall tyres, which is why i rate them.

but maybe not the most economic, not noisy though.

Just phoned conti uk and looking like a result :) there is a problem with the anti ageing property , I may be getting refund on these minus the tread wear and just tyre not valves and fitting

I will keep you informed

You would expect cracking like that on an out of date tyre or one thats been run on too lower pressures but newish and you say the pressures are quite accurate, not very good is it?    Hope Mr. C gives you a new set of cheap cheap tyres.

I have always had good service from Conti tyres.  Still as I have got older and a slower driver I tend to go for budget tyres and have never noticed any difference in braking etc.

Slower mate?  Should be getting faster like me, well, it's seems like I am.

Area manager for continental tyres about to contact me too assess the tyres at my local tyre specialist

Just had all my Continentals replaced at 33600 miles due to all being worn out and down to treadbars. Tyres were rotated at 20K. The side walls were starting to crack on my Continentals as well. Have been replaced by Hankook "Kineregys" by blackcircles.com

Were fitted at a local independant garage. Excellent service. Tyres are 195/55/R15. Very quiet tyres and ride seems better as well. Energy rating "C" and wet grip "C". Noise 69DB. Well pleased and significantly cheaper than other well known brands which werent so effecient!

Right update !

Bill from continental as just left the building :) , has thoroughly checked my tyres and its just cosmetic down to the way they now Make their tyres, even had a video :) in essence the cracking is where the side wall overrides the tread on Eco tyres , they are made differently to standard tyres and after a few k further the crack will disappear , however the did offer me the equivalent of 2 new tyres that he would send to dealers for my part worn tyres, I'd still has to purchase 2 further tyres and the fitting there of , he was a very genuine gentleman and said " there's to much scaremongering going on" " the tyres are fine and I've got at least 20k still on them 6.5mm all round :0 , so I'm happy with what the manufacturer has said and now will leave them on, he did say however for me to change fronts to rear and left to right also as this will help as the tyres are non directional

Adds Continental and Barum to list of "distress purchases".

Well not knowing Bill but knowing experts like Bill, that would not run tyres with visible cracking them selfs, i would just get new tyres fitted.

Or get Bill to put that in a Letter & keep in the Glove Box, it might make you and other road users feel safe.

What exactly was Bills Job title and training in?  Get him to put that on the letter.

Is he a Area Sales Manager or some qualified tyre technician?

Why if you are getting 2 tyres replaced, do you have to pay them for buying 2 more,

can you not go where you want to purchase the 2 other tyres?
