Mirror puddle lights not working when interior lights off?

Featured Replies

Was cleaning the car yesterday, doors were open a long time so i turned the interior lights off.

When locking the car, ch lights came on (fogs, tails and license plate) but not the side puddle lights. This had me puzzled for a while, tried all the different settings for the mirror adjustement dial, auto lights, no auto lights, etc. In the end i remembered to turn the interior lights back on, and now they seem to work.

Is this normal behaviour? Can someone replicate this with their Superb?

Which side puddle lights?  The ones in the bottom of the door or the ones in the wing mirror arms?

The ones in the mirror arms.

This morning, went out to work, unlocked the car and again the lights underneath the mirrors didn't come on. Didn't think to try to open the door to check if they only come on when you open the door though...thought they were supposed to come on when you lock/unlock the car with CH/LH active?

My CH/LH lights are inactive, but puddle lights in mirrors still come on when locking/unlocking. Also they come on straight away after unlocking and when I open the door when leaving the car.

Hmm.. This is with autolights after dark? Or all the time?

It doesn't matter if Auto lights are off or on and I think it doesn't matter if its day or night.

The bulbs underneath the wing mirrors are w5w t10 type. Let me know if you need instructions on how to remove and replace them.

Well...i replaced the bulbs with the same leds i use in all w5w fittings, and they used to work just fine...will pop the old filemant bulbs back in there and see what happens...

So went outside, unlocked the car, nothing. I popped the mirror, replaced 1 LED with a filament bulb, opened the door, nothing. Closed the door, covered the lightsensor with my hand, opened the door and they came on (1 LED and 1 filament) replaced the filament, closed the door, it worked. Locked the car, unlocked the car, nothing.

So you'd think it's related tothe auto lights. However, yesterday nighti unlocked the car, ch/lh came on, not the mirror lights. Opened the door, nothing.

Wierd this...

Welcome to the twilight zone.

I noticed mine don't come on if the mirrors are folded in.

Mine do.

When changing bulbs you have to start the car to rest the circuit. I had a blow bulb in the door bottom and changed the bulb without putting the key in and switch ignition on and it never worked till I did so.

Aha. I'll try the starting to reset thing, and if that fails i'll leave the mirrors unfolded to see if that works.

Doing my head in! :-)

Mine do.

Just tried again and defo doesn't come on if folded in. Maybe a vagcom thing to fix?

Unlocked car at night, lh lights on. No mirror lights. (Folded) came home, ignition off, key out, open door, ch + mirror lights on. Locked car + folded mirrors, all stayed on for 10secs.

Well, they don't seem to come on when unlocking or locking during the day, but when it's dark they do, and when i open the door in. The dark they come on too. So guess all is well. Thanks guys!

I've just put some new LEDs in mine, and noticed that the puddle lights will come on for 3 times in succession, before they have a little rest.

I think there must be a module that monitors the number of times the lights are called on, before they are temporarily deactivated. Only thing I can think of is that the housing doesn't look like it wall stand much heat from an incandescent bulb, so it might be to protect from melting the plastic parts and rubber bulb holder?

Good thinking, might be the solution. Had no problems lately, they seem to come on just fine!

 JackBlade,

I quite fancy LED replacements for the bulbs underneath the wing mirrors.

Did use the w5w t10 bulbs of the type described here ?

If you're still offering instructions for dismantling etc that would be great.

Hi, I posted instructions and suggested bulb on this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/287978-led-in-mirror-downlight/#entry3414369

The bulbs I used are different. It doesn't say what SMDs are used in your link to the eBay bulbs, which normally means they are the lower output ones. If you like the blue-ish/white look then try the ones in my post - they just take a while to arrive.
