Normal v Eco 1.6DSG

Featured Replies

I have now had the car for two months now, and although the economy is better than my 2.0dsg mkII, still dissapointed. Have been driving the car in eco and been getting somewhere around the 53/55mpg.

today I decided to drive in normal mode, and with motorway and a roads I have come home with around 60mpg.

is it possible that with the DSG, normal is a better selection. I feel that in eco, I could be using more fuel on the motorway each time I take my foot off the accelertor, the revs drop, and a couple of seconds later I have my foot back on the accelerator (no I dont drive jerky like that!!).

thoughts as always are appreciated.

"Eco" mode is probably specifically tuned for the EC "economy tests" rather than for "real World" driving.

Something I noticed was that when in 'Eco' mode and on the overrun the car freewheels, the revs drop to tick over and the message 'Eco' shows on the dash. Surely this is still using fuel as the engine is still ticking over. When in 'Normal' mode the revs don't drop when on the override, so isn't the fuel supply cut off to save fuel, the rotating wheels keeping the engine turning over ?.

This could have an effect why it appears more economical in 'Normal' than 'Eco' mode maybe. Obviously when on a longer perhaps motorway type journey the difference is far less. The dash display also shows the adaptive lights, steering and air con are given less of a helping hand when in 'Eco' mode.

I found the car very sluggish in 'Eco' mode, often requiring a firm push on the accelerator, again maybe using more fuel than when in 'Normal' mode with quicker throttle response. If the cruise was re-activated in 'Eco' mode it took a while to get back up to the previous speed.

There was little to no difference in economy going by the dash display mpg readout, showing about 62mpg whether in 'Eco' or 'Normal' mode. I tried 'Sport' but it kept the revs too high for my relaxed driving style.
