Minimising My Risk

Featured Replies

Am giving some thought to buying a Fabia Elegance on a private sale.

I have spoken to the person handling the sale who seems genuine enough.  The registered owner has moved to the Czech Republic and has asked him, as a good friend, the handle the sale on her behalf.  I explained that I was nervous as he is not the owner so he gave me her phone number abroad to speak to her.  But I could be speaking to anybody.  He also assured me that it is possible to electronically transfer payment for the car directly into a bank account which she still has in the UK.

I will certainly have a HPI check on the car if I go ahead. But all of this could be a big con.  How else can I make sure I am not being taken for a ride over this?.

Very Risky.

In fact sounds too much like a con.

You buy a car and collect it and pay cash, no transfers.

So first you have a car and a V5 and you are checking and taking the Sellers ID & you photograph them at their house etc.

That includes the HPI etc.

This one sounds like a 'Walk Away' and keep looking.

There are loads of cars for sale, you do not need the hassle.

Have you seen the car and the V5 yet and who is the Regstered Keeper on the V5?

You can PM me the registration number and i will do a simple check, but not a HPI.

Even if you have the slightest suspicion, pull out. Don't bother wasting your time, there are plenty of other same spec cars on the market that you could buy. How is she supposed to sign the v5 off with her signature if she isnt in the country?

You haven't seen the car have you? I'm 100% its a con. Until your happy snd sitting in it I wouldn't believe a word.

99% chance its a con. Walk away. Quickly.

Run away. There are plenty of cars that don't sound dodgy as ****.

classic con,

how do you know the person on the other end of the phone is the owner of the car?

is the car at a very good price?

how do you know the bank account belongs to the person,

V5 to follow?

walk away or rather run away

If a scam, cash is risky. There have been a number of people mugged when going to collect cars in Luton this year, and nationally this is increasing.

Scam

just reading it instantly reminded me of the victim of the exact same thing explaining what happened on BBC a few months ago, I think it was on that Fake Britain show

NO! NO! NO! this is one of the oldest scams going. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. Honestly, never do a deal in this way, you are asking for trouble.

Accepting Cash is risky because it can be counterfeit.   Bankers Drafts are Risky and a PITA, again they can be counterfeit.

Accepting Cheques is risky, waiting to clear to let the car go, losing the sale.

Trusting anyone is risky.

It is amazing how we all get along in life with all these risks.

If it bothers people go buy at a Dealer, that is a whole different set of risks.

Is my Deposit Safe, are they ripping me off? etc etc

So go to a Large Dealership, well that is bound to be easy, 'What is the worst that can happen'!!

Con Con Con!!

Do one quick while you still have your money.

Let me guess, it's an absolute bargain price???

I bet if you go through google images you can find the pictures

they used. There's loads of these dodgy foreign scams going on.

Slept on this and decided not to go ahead.  When I rang the person looking after the sale, the car had already been taken off advert - assume that someone else has bought it.  Thanks for the advice.

The cars are usually taken from the advert because somebody else spotted the scam and reported it.

This is a scam often used, my Brother in Law went after a BMW which was advertised just over half price. The advert said the car was in Oxford. When he rang he was told by a young lady she had moved to Italy to live with her new partner  and had taken the car with her but no probs, she could have the car shipped back to UK and it could be collected from the docks. " Just pay the courier who will tell you where to collect the car from"... He ended all interest there.

Car back on advert again today so don't know what's going on.  Anyway I'll leave this one for someone else.

Its been said, its a scam, someone reported it, it got taken down, so they've put it back up again.

Noone bought it, because it doesn't exist.

Perhaps report it yourself to save someone misery.

Walk away, plenty of other cars out there from decent sellers/garages...

there was a similar sort of scam a few months back where a members car on a legit listing on autotrader was advertised on fleabay by a scam artist this got took down and shortly replaced with another ripped off image of someone else's car if my memory is correct
