Sign of the times mate. Some people are

cowardly scum.

If you think you're peed off now just wait

until someone comes along to say

'accidents happen' or 'it's only a car'.

Irritating isn't it.

I live in a cul-de-sac ful of kids riding their bikes, playing football etc (as once did I, to be fair). One of them went straight into the side of a car last week, denting the wheel arch. Fortunately it was his Dad's car. We didn't see him for the rest of the day

So you don't accept that accidents do happen then?

Of course accidents happen. However in my

mind when someone does something like that

(And please don't try and tell me they didn't

notice when they did it) and then makes the

conscious decision to scarper without leaving a

note or better still waiting until they could speak

to the owner (if nothing else to apologise).

Then it can no longer be classified as accidental

as far as I'm concerned. Just as cowardly, irresponsible

and downright wrong. I'm not sure you and I will ever

agree on this one Graham.

Bit like apple scrumping when we were kids, harmless **** back then, but grand theft vegetables today. Maybe we're all getting too precious. It can't be that the cost of a car has gone up, relative to income it's cheaper than ever.

A few months ago someone reversed into my car whilst manoeuvring out of the adjacant space. The impact was sufficient to set off the alarm on my car but they didn't stop. Unfortunately I was too late to catch their details but I doubt I would have progressed further than a few broken legs given the area...

It's definitely the principle that annoys me.  I'm capable of paying for the damage, but more because I take pride in my motor, not because I have pots of cash lying around.  A simple "sorry" note would make a world of difference....

Speaking of repair, I'd be looking to use one of those mobile scratch/dent specialists.  In people's experience is the finish as good as the promotional pictures suggest? (provided a reputable company is used of course).

I mostly sit in the car whilst my other half does supermarket shopping. I bet I could count over two hands the number of times I have seen cars reverse into or trolleys rubbed down the side of cars parked up nearby. I once apprehended one girl only to be abused with "what's it got to do with you". If I see anything now I take the number of the offending car and stick a note under the windscreen showing the number of the offending car. Sadly you are right they are cowards and it typifies the state this country's attitude to each other is these days

While agreeing with Graham that accidents do happen, I'm less inclined to regard anything as an accident if the offender scarpers without any kind of apology, offer of reparation if appropriate, etc. Yes, a car is only a car - but it's most people's second-largest investment and it's reasonable to want to hold onto as much of its value for as long as possible, ie to keep it unblemished. I've had minor knocks on both of my Yetis, both within a few weeks of taking delivery of them and both from individuals who have left the scene without any effort to say sorry - and it's very annoying.

I personally take great pride and care with all my things....my car especially. Time and time again I see people acting careless and recklessly and sometimes they create damage to other people's things. They are not accidents.

I accept accidents will happen. I resent careless and reckless people.

It's a difficult one if the damage was caused by the actions of a child. However if the childish mishaps are not checked I guess they become the careless and reckless who have no responsibility.

Whatever ...... it's happened and personally I'd get it fixed and move on

Someone mentioned the old days, and how we played in the street 'nawl.  Sure, I certainly did, but if a car came, we stopped and gawped.  There was no playing around any vehicles, except perhaps the oakey bloke.

Everyones' dad walked to work.  Only the posh ones had a bike.

This. I've had a few wing mirrors clipped off on my old Astra and someone clipped the wing knocking the indicator lens out. Did anyone leave a note? No! On one occasion I was convinced it was a neighbour but he never owned up. It was an easy fix so I wouldn't have been after money just would have been nice if he said sorry. My brother's Felly wing got smashed in completely in the works car park. No one owned up and security wouldn't give the footage. Car was worth no more than £250 but it's the principal. Same goes for my dad's Octy too. Someone swiped it going into a space and caved the sill in. No one owned up to that either. It boils my p155 when people don't own up to doing wrong and take the "I'm all right Jack" attitude. I park miles away from people just to prevent it.

hovis, whats that? am i missing something?

They'll be reminiscing about Green Shield Stamps next.

when did you have 'the op'

The sex change or the english accent?  :giggle:

Sod the apology, I'd rather have accurate insurance details.

I agree, but you'd still feel slightly happier about it if someone owned up

and apologised. I would anyway.

Ex SIL picked up her new car last week. Stopped to do some shopping on the way home and some low-life keyed it.

We need more Trunk Monkeys

Yep that would do for me, or better still a boot monster:

Sadly thing are getting worse. Certainly in the South West anyway.

I grew up in the Midlands where it seems that most people respected other peoples cars and property. Most people back then owned there cars so had a modicum of respect for other peoples cars. OK you would get a mirror knocked a tad or a wheel trim (remember those?) or the car stolen.

14 Years ago I moved to sunny wet Wiltshire, within two weeks I had a trolley dent in my 6 month old Fiesta, after changing to a MK1 focus that lasted 1 week before a ding in the front wing in the works car park, looked like a Disco had hit it but no proof. A few years later a 9 month old Mondeo wagon, within two days of ownership I had a dimple in the near side rear door...  shortly after a matching dimple in the off side rear door. I always park as far away as possible from super market entrance.

The one that takes the biscuit was when I was leaving the supermarket with a trolley full of shopping when in the distance at the edge of the car park a sharp suited oil haired back BMW 3 series driver took his brief case out of his car and placed it on the bonnet of my car, after opening and taking something out and closing said case slid it off the front of my car and off he went. Whacking deep scratches right down the front of my car. Too far away to catch the plate and no chance to run given the random directional recently exhumed people with shopping trolleys with a knack of stopping suddenly to talk to a plant in front of me. A true story.

OK now the time to add a reference to my beloved Yeti.... 5 days ago I got a text from the neighbour "sorry, just hit your car, only a little mark" with an offer to fix. Actual damage is small paint damage but also a little dent........ My car is my only form of transport so I cannot do without it unless there is a substitute and I do not have the time to sort a fix in the near term... Neighbours  have been good to me and are good people but the cost of a real fix (fix/ new door skin, paint, blend, trim etc) plus hire car would be a lot of money considering that the same thing may happen the day after the repair in a car park. OK a bodge may be cheaper but may leave the problem worse than the current problem... At least the neighbour let me know....

Told them not to worry. I hope to keep the car a while.  When the time comes for my Jana and I to part ways I'll have the fix (or more over time) done. For now we'll just go on and enjoy life. Needless to say I'm really pi$$ed off at the damage.
