Cam Belt Tensioner Pointer

Featured Replies

I have had a cam belt kit change and noticed that when the engine was cold the pointer sat smack between the V notch, after a short run and when the engine was hot I re-checked and found the pointer to be about 8 mm past (clockwise) the V notch.

Is this normal, the belt feels very tight.

DB.

It will point at a different direction depending on where the internals of the engine are sitting, all down to when the compression is happening.

Edit: never read the full post, sorry!

8mm past sounds quite excessive.

Mine was 3/4mm away from the notch (anticlockwise) when running. That was on cold start.

Anyone else got any feedback on this.

Is that with the engine running?

Running and switched off, then after about 4 hrs when the engine is cold it has returned smack bang in the centre of the V notch.

Personally I wouldn't worry. The alternative you be to back it off a bit but that would mean the belt is loose when cold.

Realistically it doesn't make that much difference.

Finally resolved, on slackening off the tensioner nut and easing the tensioner pulley forward I could see that the anchor tab was bent and not seating in the head slot, obviously the tensioner nut had been tightened up without the tab locating in the slot.

After a lot of fiddling I managed to straighten the tab insitu, relocate it correctly, adjusted and tightened.

Thanks for the comments.

That is bad and potentially dangerous. Good find though.

I'd be interested if the timing was right given that error.
