Im soon to take delivery of a Fabia Monte Carlo Estate.

 

I am looking at ordering the side protection strips, plastic strips along the middle of the door. They are textured black plastic. 

 

I am wanting to spray them a gloss black to match the other exterior black trims and heres my plan:

 

Spary with Hycote plastic primer (or a similar brand)

Leave 24hrs to dry

Spray with Hycote Gloss black (or a similar brand)

leave 24hrs to dry

2nd coat of black gloss if required

leave 24hrs

Finish with a spray coat of clear lacquer

leave 48hrs

then mount them on the car

 

 

Does this sound like it'll work? or should i do it a diffrent way?

Sounds good.

 

But as a spray painter i would have cut the whole procedure to about 4-5 hours.

Rather than 4-5 days.

 

Once you have lightly sanded not just to get a key, but to remove any wax or release agent on the plastic,

Dust free and wiped over with a panel wipe.

 

Be light with the spraying on the Plastic/Bumper Primer. Thin all over, a couple of minutes later, thin all over.

Edges done first. then just a pass over the flatter surface, no runs, light spraying.

Let it Flash Off.

 

You will be sitting the plastics near some heat/warmth, not too hot though.

(Do not cook them)

 

Then some Build Primer. light coats, let dry, then dry sand lightly, this is the preparation and the smooth surface.

Worth taking time, like all of 20-30 minutes.

Cleaned and panel wiped. 

 

A couple of very light passes of the 'Black Magic Paint' (Metallic/Pearlescent) that is the same as used on the other Monte Carlo Trim.

 

Let flash off and dry.  Light sand dry, or Wet sand with very fine grade, dry and use a Tack Rag.

 

The Final top coats of Black Magic will be still wet when i put on the Lacquer compatible with the paint.

Allow to dry for a short time,.

They spray a nice run free top coat of clear lacquer. Do not touch, do not move the stuff, keep away from flies.

 

(If not happy, lightly Wet and Dry with fine paper, & re lacquer. but let fully dry before doing that, so thats an extra hour.)

 

Total start to finish under 5 hours.

Others might do it your way.

I am in the forces, im in no rush for them to be ready and with shift work, i am able to leave them for longer as i'm not gunna be sat around at home. 

 

Do i need 2 diffrent primers then? a standard and a filler one? or can i use one or the other with several coats?

 

What do you mean by 'flash off' ??

 

I thought the paint had to be properly dry before being able to apply the lacquer?

There are many good sites with advice or just watch something on Youtube, but this covers Cans well enogh.

 

Thin coats, drying quickly.

the paint dries in minutes. Flashing off is actually not the term for what you are doing, but just spray lightly, not thick coats,

untill the very final last 2 which spray wetter.

 

i would use the plastic primer thin, just a bonding coat.

Plastic prepared, clean and sanded, then see how it looks on the plastic.

But if it fills the surface then fine.

 

Build Primer gives thickness, and you can sand smooth.

But i still just spray over thin misting coats and have it drying in minutes between coats.

 (once you have bought both cans they are there for the next time. or just buy the one can, i would rather have both, only £7 each.)

 

You are looking when lightly spraying that there is no reaction between the Plastic Primer, and Build/filler primer.

 

& between primer and colour coats or colour coat and lacquer.

 

You do not want any wax or silicone around, you will see the paint not looking right if there is wax,

You get wax or even just detergent from the likes of the bucket you use to wet the wet and dry in.

So use a clean bucket.

 

Always shake rattle cans untill you are sure you shook long enough, then do it again, then again lots of shaking..

Especially with the Colour Coat Can.

Doesn't painting these kind of defeat the purpose? I know manufacturers often do this on higher trim models, but again I have always thought that painted bumpers etc are rather daft.  Look good, but daft.

I agree, but i want them on my monte as i think it looks better with them on than not when the car is white. Have a look on google for the monte eatate then go on skoda configurator and you'll see it without the side trim. Other coloura it looks fine without them but the white , i think, looks better with. I dont like the idea of flat black plastic when all the other trim is gloss.
