Component protection Skoda Fabia

Featured Replies

Hi,

Wondering if any of you guys can help. My 2018 (67 plate) Skoda fabia was delivered to me today. I have been trying to work out how to use the radio/bluetooth all day.

It says my phone is connected to the cars Bluetooth and that media can be played through it, but whenever I go to play a song it says it’s playing for a few seconds (but no sound comes out??) and then automatically pauses the song. The radio also does not come through the sound system despite saying it’s playing  and the volume is permenantly on mute as I cannot access the sound settings.

A message is permenantly displayed at the at the top of the screen saying “component protection active”. I can only assume this is why the sound system does not work?

If someone could help me that would be great.

Welcome

Yes the CP is the reason why there is no sound.

Has the ‘head unit’ (in the glovebox, if it’s like the other models) been changed?

They are coded to the car to help prevent them being stolen.

You need to contact whoever supplied the car really.

This is the integrated unit - nothing in glove box (BTW: in Fabia III there is always nothing in glove box except a whole to insert SD card in Bolero and Amundsen - but this one is Swing).

Does Components Protection message go away when you switch the ignition on? If not then definitely contact car supplier.

As it is a used car, it could be that the previous owner fitted an upgrade infotainment system and when doing that would have needed to get Component Protection removed - then they thought it would be clever to remove that upgraded infotainment system and refit the original prior to trading that car in thinking/hoping that the car would recognise its original factory fitted infotainment system - the car would not as it has been changed to accept the new one! So if bought from a dealer, get them to hand this car into a Skoda dealer or a good VW Group Indie who has confirmed that they can remove Component Protection, this costs about £75 which you should not be paying if you bought it from a dealer.

Maybe even a stupid car dealer that swopped parts without removing Component Protection!

Edit:- one warning though, the plan is that all VW Group dealers or other licenced users of the kit to remove Component Protection will not remove Component Protection from a component that was originally fitted to a car that has been recorded on VW Group Mothership data base as being stolen.

Could this be why my reversing sensors aren't working either? and thanks - will keep that in mind, although I dont think its ever been stolen so should be fine!

As the Infotainment system is the user interface for the official factory fitted reversing sensors, it could well be that, especially if the previous owner bought that car without parking sensors, then fitted an upgraded Infotainment system and then get reversing sensors retro fitted - although most dealers would only, due to labour costs only ever offer to sell and fit an independent reversing sensor system that only sounds a warning buzzer so that in any way connected to the Infotainment system.

It could be that when that car was traded in that the Infotainment system was found to be not working, so another working one was fitted, and that Infotainment system came from a car without factory fitted parking sensors, and so is not coded to work with them, if so it needs recoding by a dealer to suit this car.

Fitting another assembly that is covered by the Component Protection security strategy works like this, if the assembly is brand new it is "seen" as being a virgin unit, so when the dealer introduces it to the car it should accept it and when connected to VW Group Mothership, the record of protected assemblies in that car is updated to include this change. When a previously used assembly is fitted, while connected to VW Group Mothership, the new used assembly is checked against centrally held records, if it has not been logged as stolen, it is converted back to being a virgin assembly and then it will be accepted by that car and the records updated to reflect this change.  Obviously any smart assembly being swopped or added to a car then needs to be recoded to suit that car and any options fitted to that car.
